To grow or not to grow... (poppies)

I've have recently become interested in trying to grow poppies. I would like to do them indoors but from what I have been reading it doesn't really seem worth the while. I should also say that my goal would be to gather opium from the plants, not to use the pods to make tea. It seems like one needs to have a lot of pods to get a real amount of opium from them, perhaps someone could let me know about how many plants are needed. I want to do them indoors because I live in the city where the isn't very much outdoor space. I could potential try and plant some seeds that I have from an old dried pod in my back yard. But considering that I want opium from the plants I'm not sure if it is worth the while. I also have to worry about others seeing them, though they might not even think twice about them. I should also mention that I have never grown any plants before and growing them outside sounds like you only need to plant the seeds and then let nature take it from there. I guess I could plants some seeds just to watch them grow and then use the pods for tea, but that is just a last resort as I really just want to have some opium. Thanks!

if they are easy enough I would say grow as much as you can...
Small amounts would do well with tea tho I have tryed some in Vancouver when they were selling the pods all round.

So unless I have a field opium is out of the question? Basically then I guess I'm not all that interested because I can just buy pods online. Of course I could get the satisfaction of growing them myself but.....

noooo you can just grow 5 or more plants
No need for a crop
The more plants the more pods
Might as well buy and grow

So 5 plants is enough for opium? How much would be expected from 5 plants?

5 poppy plants each plant bearing 5-7 pods and each pod producing 200-600mgs of raw latex = 12,000mg = 12 grams
and don't forget you can harvest more than once. these are only estimates.

I mentioned before that I have seeds that are still in a dried poppy pod, should I use these to start growing, or should I just buy seeds online that I know will grow? I know a site that has good seeds, so should I risk using old ones or just get new ones in which I will also know what kind they will be?

Yeah, it is from a batch that I had made tea from, I just wanted to keep one. I guess I can use those seeds then. Just need to get a few other supplies and I will give it a try.

i say don't pick between tea and opium latex, why not just bleed the pods, then harvest them and make tea and smoke
*anyone have any idea when the price of poppy pods is going to return to normal? if ever?

Today is day 1, I planted 4 seeds in 4 separate 8in pots. I was able to put all 4 pots on my window sill which faces east and seems to be pretty open for sun. I guess now I just have to wait a week or two and see if they sprout. Wish me luck!

Not very well... I was able to get two small pods, very small. They were not really worth anything, but it was cool to see the actual plant grow into a flower and then have the petals fall off. I've started over though, and tried to make it better. Hopefully it works out this time.
