Easy question on RR's Laundry Basket Tek

I've been watching RR's DVD in preparation for my laundry basket oyster grow. I'm going to be doing 4 colors of oysters in one basket: blue, pearl, golden, and pink. I'm using pieces of landscaping fabric as separators so the 4 different sections of mycelia don't mix.
Anyway, as for my question, the straw is removed from the pasteurization bath at some time. Do I remove the straw from the bath right after the pasteurization, or let it cool first? To room temp, or does it even matter? How many hours should I allow for cooling of the straw before I can layer it with the grain spawn?
Thanks!

Remove the straw/ or drain right away. I usually let my straw/cottonseed cool to about 80 degrees before I mix in spawn

Mixing species in one basket probably isn't going to be ideal. Even if you keep them separate it could be more trouble than it's worth. The different species will have different colonization speeds and so one section will be ready to fruit while others still want to be left alone to colonize. Then one may be totally spent and attracting pests while the others still want to fruit.
Go ahead and give it a try since experimentation is good. But in the long run it's probably simpler to do 4 different baskets.

Yes, I know MonkeyKnifeFight. But I just want to see the multi-colors if there is any overlap in fruiting. My guess is that there will be. It's not a big deal if it doesn't work out.

Oh, and a good sign is that the 4 varieties had virtually identical grain colonization times. I've got 2 quart grain jars per type. The last 3 jars (all three different varieties) should be 100% tomorrow, when I plan to make the basket.
PS: And interestingly, for 3 out of 4 of these varieties, the jars were noc'd from agar wedges, while the fourth variety used an LC syringe. And yet the colonization times were about the same!

hey I got a question to add to your question that I think is relevant. I have seen some posts that say they leave straw to drain for days before using... does it matter how long you let it sit or is a few days not going to matter? Another way of asking it is will that extra time matter say if using lime in the pasteurization and or gypsum in the jars... or straight straw?

Don't let is sit. Inoculate as soon as it cools down. It's a race.

ok but lets just suppose, as I know this type of situation happens in this hobby, you had to leave it sitting because life happened... What would the longest you could go and be comfortable with. Lime buys you some time as people point out and gypsum at this point not sure if it still helps or not but.... say you use those and not use those.. would one have say 2 days longer or would you need to be safe re-pasteurize after I dunno 1 night/day of draining/cooling? I am about to find out so I am curious what I am in for.

I haven't been there yet but I do know once the straw is wet, it's a breeding ground. I'll follow along and see what happens and what others say.

Mushroom mycelium will colonize right through landscape cloth. Remember, mycelium is composed of long rows of cells connected end to end, while being only 1 cell in thickness. RR

Thanks, RR. Just in time! I will remove the landscape cloth and use heavy clear plastic instead.

Started my 4-oysters-in-one-basket grow today. I replace the landscape cloth dividers with heavy plastic sheeting (whew!).

Pasteurized my straw and ready to go. Oyster mushrooms are, left to right, Yellow, Pearl, Pink, and Blue.

Inoculation with grain spawn.

Placed in front of attractive rubber tree.

Covered with a plastic tent pierced with many arrowhead holes.

Those are going to be awfully small substrates for straw. I'd have made four baskets and used a single culture in each. RR

I'll do it that way next time. The dividers were a pain in the ass anyway.

Too late. And by "four baskets and used a single culture in each," I think RR means on the order of 7 quarts of colonized grain per basket. That's what he uses on his video. I only grew 2 quarts of each of the four grains cultures.

Ineresting set up. I was thinking you would center the basket each way. I too am thinking of doing the basket grow with oysters. Are you going to make a journal? I would love to see how this turns out. thanks for posting..

Yes, that probably would have been the sensible way to do it.

That's not enough. Grain to grain transfers can give you 20 quarts of each culture in ten days. RR
