yea, just make sure you properly pasteurize the coffee grounds before adding them.

recipe:
1 brick coir 1 qt coffee 1 qt verm 3 tbsp
5-6 qts spawn
fills a 68-72 qt tub ~4 inches. which is optimal.
2 inch holes at substrate level, 4 of them , 2 on each long side
2 inch holes higher up near the top of the tub, most people do 4 like the lower but i do 2, one on each short side.

no, not a good idea. thats just asking for contam. you must properly pasteurize coffee.

But, why so much gypsum?
You can, but pasteurization is better. Check out RR's videos @ www.mushroomvideos.com
Sterilized substrate is more contam prone than pasteurized.

Fill 1 tote the same size that is un-altered w/ water & put your entire tub in that.
OR,
put the tub in the bathtub & dunk it w/ a weight on top. Just make sure to have some doll rods or PVC handy that'll fit through the sides of the totes. That way you can tip out th water, like Total did here...

It's basically the same as the second one, just instead of using the bathtub you use a smaller tub. There really is no easy easy way of dunking a mono, which is why I prefer my One Flush Wonders

I was reading through a thread a while ago (no idea where it is now) where somebody was trying to figure out the optimal ratio of gypsum to a brick of coir. They started with the amount recomended for a quart jar of grain (tsp? tbsp? dont know/remember) then figured out how many quarts are in a brick of hydrated coir and did the math. It came to 3 and a half cups. reliable members were a part of the discussion (not gonna name names) so ive always just been throwing 3cups of gypsum into my bulk sub and its been workin' good!
even if that logic is a little fucked and the gypsum content is a little high, it hasnt hurt at all, and if anything just adds some more nutes!

I've never had 1/2 a cup of gypsum get fully incorporated to 1 gallon of water when doing my coir buckets per Damion5050's tek.
The tek is 1 tbs of gypsum per 4 quart jars of spawn. Yea, he doesn't give it Exactly there, but you get the point. 1 brick of coir is 9 qt roughly + 2 quart verm = 11
that's 3 tbs of gypsum...

lol hmm
maybe thats my mistake and it should have been 3 and a half tbs instead of cups.
I mixed the powder straight into my other dry ingrediets (qt of coffee and qt of vem) then dumped it all into the bucket to pasteurize.
Well, at least too much gypsum isn't detrimental to your grow

No it's not at all. It'll just clump up on the bottom of your bucket & probably not come out.
Just didn't want the OP to waste any gypsum. It's not expensive, but wasting is still Wasting...

haha well, some people reccomend up to 10%, RR says 10% is a maximum.
10% of that mix would be a full quart
so0-yeah i think i'm okay haha. I think we went way beyond what the OP wanted to know in the first place lol.
FOR THE RECORD: 3 tbsp gypsum per brick of coir!

i would just use the cheap paper stripe but if youre feelin official then get the electronic kind. gypsum is a ph buffer, but also has nutrients. You can use a lot but not too much.
