The U.N. to end the war on drugs?!?!? Here's our chance!

Hey guys so this was posted on Reddit last night and I think a fair number of you may be interested:
Quote:
So, I recieved an E-mail from Avaaz today. For those who haven't been to Avaaz, they have petitions to voice your opinion against some major world issues. Any who, the E-mail I recieved today is saying that the U.N. will gather to talk about possibly ending the war on drugs. I will leave the link for the petition below for any one to look into it, and if any one has any information about this U.N. meeting coming up, that would be awesome ^_^
http://www.avaaz.org/en/end_the_war_on_drugs/?fpla
Edit: I went back to the E-mail to see if I missed anything, and the E-mail states that every entry into this petition will be brought to the U.N. meeting by Avaaz and The Global Comission on Drug Policy. So while you check out the page, please enter the petition if you support ending this pointless war.
Cheers!

I'd be more exited if the "UN" part read "US". The US has a history of saying "screw the UN" when the two are in disagreement on a particular subject.

Maybe, but it's still a good start.

This was posted in the News section and then it disappeared. Maybe they removed it because it was a false article? If that was the case I'd rather have Veggie explain that rather than just remove the article. I gave my E-mail address to sign the petition and would like to know if the intentions were not pure.

In days, we could finally see the beginning of the end of the ‘war on drugs’. This expensive war has completely failed to curb the plague of drug addiction, while costing countless lives, devastating communities, and funneling trillions of dollars into violent organized crime networks.
Experts all agree that the most sensible policy is to regulate, but politicians are afraid to touch the issue. In days, a global commission including former heads of state and foreign policy chiefs of the UN, EU, US, Brazil, Mexico and more will break the taboo and publicly call for new approaches including decriminalization and regulation of drugs.
....
This could be a once-in-a-generation tipping-point moment -- if enough of us call for an end to this madness. Politicians say they understand that the war on drugs has failed, but claim the public isn't ready for an alternative.
Let's show them we not only accept a sane and humane policy -- we demand it. Sign the petition and share with everyone --if we reach 1 million voices, it will be personally delivered to world leaders by the global commission.

72 hours to End the War on Drugs In 72 hours, we could finally see the beginning of the end of the ‘war on drugs’. More signatures are needed, if you haven't got round to it yet now is the time. Need everybodys support. Thanks.

Just curious... has anyone else thought about what it will mean when drugs are regulated by the state? part of me feels that we are signing away more freedoms when we allow drugs to be regulated.

I don't know if this counts as "regulated by the state," but medical is working out pretty well, at least in California (personal experience ).

June 2nd come on! I can't wait to see the result. Either I'm going to get really pissed off, or really proud and hopeful for a bright future. Ideally, I want to go to the store and buy psychedelics.

even if drugs are regulated most still will not have access to them, they won't be at your local 7/11. they will be prescription and the black market will just be flooded with prescription meds, this is just another system of control that will allow the gov't to know who is supplying and who is dealing.

So I'm guessing psychedelics would be out of the question still.

Nope. LSD and Mushrooms are having medical studies (or have recently.) LSD is very useful for psychotherapy, and both are GREAT for curing cluster/migraine headaches.

it means that they will be regulated for purity and sold at a fixed price to legal adults. if they really made everything available, drugs would most likely be sold in specialized shops like liquor in some states.
i think the only sensible way to end drug prohibition is to put a lot of public funding into media campaigns focusing on the dangers of irresponsible drug use as well as publicly funded rehab programs for addicts.

I don't think anyone expects complete legalization any time soon, this is merely a step in the right direction... an important step.

What about 10-50 years from now? It's hard..impossible to flat out predict the future but how long do you think it would take? I honestly think were getting close with marijuana which consequently might open up our society to having our own choices with drugs and some type of all out legalization gets set in place. Even though I will probably be out or trying to get out of the US well before that happens

The difference between cannabis and other psychoactive medicines is that they mostly work on the spirit/psychological level. Cannabis had been proven time and time again to work against a number of physical and psychological ailments. The physical ones such as glaucoma, migraines, aiding in ingesting food against AIDS, insomnia and so on really helped it get a wide acceptance.
Mushrooms, LSD, DMT all help tremendously in psychological ailments and very much so in spiritual transitions but you're asking a society that doesn't accept spirit to legalize medicines that are mostly used for that.

I just want to use entheogens for my own interests, I doubt I could get a prescription for just wanting to enjoy a spiritual experience though the use of psychedelic chemicals. I'd probably get told to go to church.

I understand that, they also help with sleep deprivation and can readjust the body to it's natural sleep cycles, however when there are synthetic drugs that can only be produced in a laboratory with high priced equipment that 'do the same thing', it's not going to make much of a difference. Cannabis is an exception in that so many people use it and it helps many ailments, not just migraines or insomnia.
Psychedelics have many potential hazards for an enslaved society.

I never disputed this. You mistake my direction. I'm speaking about the general interest of the economy and the government who steals from it. If something costs more to make and requires tens of different regulations and certificates to operate, then it will make them more money. If people are taking medicines that open up their perception and are virtually free to grow at home, where can the government step in to dominate them?
