Just looked around google, that indeed does look like specimen #2, it shows the characteristic of the brown "frills" around the caps edge.

I looked through all my field guides under Agrocybe and not much was there. A note in Mushrooms Demystified said that Agrocybe's are hard mushrooms to identify.
Thanks for the I.D Fish!

yes Agrocybe can be very hard to tell a part. but given that this one is veiled and was growing in grass, id call it A. molesta

Would the "frills"(Is there a better term?) also give away this species?

Thanks for the I.D brother!
I have several field guides kicking around, and I am always looking to extend my collection, if you do not mind me asking, what in your opinion are the best field guides to have on hand?

I started into this hobby cultivating edibles, and have been trying to branch out into every facet of mushrooms that I can wiggle my way into. Iv got a flowhood, agar setup, lab, colonizing space, and have been pumping out shiitake blocks over the last few months. If I can geto some $$ together from selling shiitake, and shiitake kits I can perhaps one day afford a nice microscope to help I.D wild finds and learn a new skill. It is amazing what this hobby will teach you, so many different lessons.

There is a fair amount of us out there, just have to know where to look I guess. The Gourmet forums have a lot of serious mycophiles and cultivators, it seems once you get away from actives the array of people you meet and come across is very wide and varied.
It's good to shoot the shit with like minded individuals, all with the central love of mushrooms. If you are ever looking into cultivating edibles let me know and I may be able to help you out brother

I also have Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada. i think it's about all there is available right now for the area.
i'm going to go talk to Greg Thorn the fungi prof at Western to see if he has any recommendations for a good local guide. he took a lot of the pics in that ontario book.
i'll let you know if he says anything, hopefully he doesn't just tell me to fuck off because i'm not a student here anymore. hahaha

If you are looking for a beginner field guide, The Mushroom Rainbow (ISBN: 978-0986940903) lists only the most easily identifiable, delicious wild mushrooms in northeast North America (Ontario included). It only has about 20 edible and 5 deadly mushrooms fully illustrated and described with the characteristics of the lookalikes of each mushroom clearly compared and contrasted with the edible mushrooms. It's small and cheap so you can take it with you on hiking trips and the like.
