thanks wisco. this is a project that has really worked well!! yews are one of the best trees to work with and i recomend them to any one wanting to try bonsai. but ya gotta get a fat trunk.
my parents just had a winecap feast tonight, i walked down in their garden and there was this massive patch of fresh fatties fruiting way away from the original inoc point!!!
heres what the tree looked like 10 minutes ago. i am covering the mushrooms so they dont dry up and mantain the nice wine color.

Neat experiment! I just hope these new growths are not disturbing the zen balance of your little bonsai garden. Looks awesome to me

Bah I saw this post at work when you first posted it and forgot to come back and say how awesome it was.
I nominated one of the pics in the ethnobotanical potm thread, mostly because you have combined two of my favorite things.

I only have one now the other died when we went away, and a friend forgot to water it.
The one I have was given to me by a family member and is actually older then I am. I keep meaning to sit down and work out what kind of tree it actually is I know it's a maple but I have no idea which one. Has some killer roots going on though.

Very cool man...
It's fun to play God sometimes and bring species together to interact.
It DOES suck that you can't eat them...maybe try once more and take some digestive enzymes before you eat them, helps me a ton with food that I have trouble digesting

at one time about 5 -6 years ago i had about 30 potential bonsai in training. then i got a job that had me out of town for 3 weeks at a time and i lost most of them. i have a few still that ive been training for over 10 years. but i confess they have been a bit neglected the last few years.
id like to see tours. the roots are called nibari if i remember correctly. heres a couple of my oldest ones. japanese black pine some random flowering plant a friend up rooted for me from his yard.

I don't know where all my old photos of it got to, so here be some new ones I took.
It's nude at the moment.

Kick ass roots

And the only one I could find from last spring when it still had leaves.

Apparently it was started in 1987 so it's not older than I am like I thought it was haha.
I really like your japanese black pine, very rockin'

oooooooo thats a beauty!! i used to have a chinese elm too years back and it was my favorite!! the leaves are the perfect size for bonsai! that species is hard to find around here but i may go on a hunt for one now that you reminded me how rad they are!
you must have to take special care since australia is pretty hot and dry right? even the summers here i gotta really pay attention.
