I dunno if anywhere that's cheap is "safe" and Im sure they are pretty far down the list(though nowhere near as bad as many cheaper places) but I never had a problem; Mexico, India, Peru, Thailand, Indonesia.

I've lived incredibly cheaply for months on end in both Nepal and India. In Goa I was paying 130 rupees for a nice hut right on the beach, and behind a great restaurant. 130 rupees is less than $3 btw, an awesome deal. In Nepal, most guest houses are less than $5 if you're not being too picky.

Haven't been there myself, but my cousin just spent a couple of months travelling in that region, and according to him it was heaven on earth. But a colleague of mine who also spent some 3 months in India complained that he didn't eat properly during all that time. As long as you like spicy, rich and pronounced flavors, it seems you're golden If you only like fries and hamburgers, then it's going to be tough.

Man I loved it! The only dish that Nepal has is daal baat though, and that's totally disgusting (white rice and potatoes/other vegetables with lentils). But they have chinese, indian, israeli, russian, german...etc as well in kathmandu and pokhara.
In India, its good too, especially in Goa. We'll in my experience, Indians are good at making Indian dishes, but not at making continental dishes like pasta or lasagna, definitely not. Awesome variety in different parts throughout the country.
In both countries you gotta be careful with the drinking water. As I got intense stomach aches on four separate occasions. Always go with bottled water which is available everywhere.

Ya,I've heard mixed reports as well about India.
Heard about someone getting sick as a dog eating some undercooked something or other.
I wouldn't be worried about that, just something to take on board.
I love spicy food btw.
Put chillies on pretty much everything I cook.

Oh yeah, I inquired after this with the people who have visited India. They all say the same thing: eat the stuff the locals eat, because that food as the quickest turnaround times: it doesn't get the chance to go bad. Eating European food is a recipe for disaster, as that is the stuff that is the most likely to have been lying around for a couple of days in 100+F temps. But even if you eat the local food, odds are you're going to suffer some mild food poisoning at some point. It's all in the game.

i eat Indian food several times a week. It can be spicy if you arent used to it but tolerance builds.
The Thai really take it to a new level though. If I order their food on the spiciest option it about kills me.

in our neighborhood, 400 Euro for a months rent is about average, and there is cheaper. Plus, central europe, bitchin' nightlife, lax weed laws, plus epic buildings from the past to present!

€ 400, that's not too much, although you can rent a room (or even a small apartment) for that in some Dutch cities as well. Especially cities with no university; otherwise the supply/demand ratio messes up the price level.

Nowhere is cheap if you're using US dollars since they went to shit. Plus if anyone sees you with American money they will probably try to kill or rob you. Exchange all your money for gold and move to India. It's super cheap there, but you'll have to get used to the smell of horrible body odor, pee, and feces. They're still working on putting plumbing in. They have tons of taxis but no plumbers.

You must be confusing North & South Korea. South Korea is a democratic country, whereas basic things such as phones, internet, and music are forbidden in North Korea. In fact american citizens aren't even allowed to enter the country. Chill place

Absolutely not true! I felt very safe in India almost everywhere I wen't. Just dress more like a "traveler" as opposed to a typical American tourist with your hawaiian shirt and slr camera and you'll be fine. Indians overall are very respectful of foreigners in their country and very religious as well, so.
And you know what, I think that the Indians only smell bad in OUR country. In theirs they smell fine. Unless I got used to it because everything smelled bad
I would however hesitate before I tell them I'm an Englishman, if I we're one. I met two English guys who got jumped and beaten in Kerala by a mob of about 20 Indian guys.

I'll have to agree with the former dudes who said Portugal. Let's say here you can buy a beer for 0,50 cents, buy a pack of cigarettes for 3,50 €, rent a house for yourself for 300 €, although the minimum wage is preeeeety low (475€) so you better bring some of yours.
Any questions you can ask the Portuguese here

Where did this idea come from that only Americans can be closed-minded d-bags?
Believe it or not, socially, we're one of the most liberal countries on Earth. Many people in Germany would throw slanderous, homophobic expletives at you for reasons neither you nor I could even conceive of. It's only fiscally that we're so conservative of our precious moneyed elites.
That's the REAL difference - there aren't really any more douchebags here, but OUR douchebags are considered national treasures and priceless natural resources.

man, Goa is like heaven on Earth!! No joke.
Its not India, in my opinion, nothing like the rest of it. I was there for this last winter, and it was 85-90 everyday, and didn't see one drop of rain the whole time, 3 months straight. All the vegetation is vividly green and alive and the place itself attracts the most interesting people and travelers, especially the northern most beach, arambol. Lots of Russians and Israelis, and Europeans there mostly, I only met one or two other Americans.
The nice thing about Goa, well among many, is the fact that you can smoke ganja wherever you damn well please! In the streets, in restaurants, and you can score lots of other drugs there as well. I knew two guys peddling acid, and a few guys who deal ketamine, cocaine, opium, and some groups that do ayahuasca ceremonies. Goa is pretty much where most of the hippies flocked to during and after the vietnam war, that and kathmandu, nepal.
I don't know, just look into it man! Beautiful oceans, deep jungles, people parasurfing, paragliding all day on awesome thermals, I can go on and on...

Got *That* shit right.
Both of these counties are kind of insular. I wouldn't go so far as to say racist, but think of your typical "frenchman" and you're getting close. Spaniards and Portugese want you to speak the language and do it well.
The kids (anyone under 30) are a completely different class of individuals and this is where you begin to see HUGE trends of liberalism/drug use/lots of sexxing.Quote:

i would try india out but from the majority of information that i gathered about the country is that it is very very dirty, rats everywhere and feces to the max everywhere.
not sure what goa is like though?
LOL feces to the maxx.
Shroomtastic - If I get some cash I'm going to Goa for sure now that I've heard you describe it.

Please don't confuse Portugal with Spain, it's the same as saying that Canada is the same as the USA. In Spain most people won't speak English because they believe that if you're going to their country you should speak Spanish, movies are all in Spanish, in Portugal everyone speaks English and no one thinks that if you come here you have to speak Portuguese, also we have many tourists so that would be completely stupid, and our movies are in their original language.
Plus what do Portuguese or Spanish people have to do with French? The three are completely different countries, with different cultures, political views and history.

If you come to Canada and go to Gatineau, Quebec.
Rent is like 500$ for a bachelors and you can easily live with under 1000$ per month.
You can go to Ottawa to get a job because in Gatineau you would have to speak french fluently. Minimum salary is around 10$ per hour.
its cheap, extremely safe and your not in a third world country.
Also, the cops don't care if you smoke weed. (seriously, they don't give a shit)

As far as I know, in Portugal, even amongst the youth, there is a strong bias against people of African descent.
I didn't experience that in Spain (amongst the youth). I was in the South and there was a large Muslim/Moroccan population there which may have affected that, seeing brown people more regularly.

I don't know how many years you lived here or what kind of people did you meet but there is no such thing.
You have stupid dumb people every were, you might find less racists here than in America (in proportion of course) never have we founded things like KKK or had racial segregation in early 19's
There are racists as there are everywhere, in a general manner we are a country with loads of immigration specially from PALOP's (Portuguese-speaking African countries), Brazil and Eastern Europe and we have no beef with that.
It doesn't seem reasonable what you're saying I'm really intrigued by what experience did you have here to make you think that.

Shrooomtastic said: man, Goa is like heaven on Earth!!
Beautiful oceans, deep jungles, people parasurfing, paragliding all day on awesome thermals, I can go on and on...
just looked up Goa on the map. Anshi National Park looks epic!

The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

How can you expect people from other countries to respect you if you can't even tell what language they speak ? You're talking about french people, right. Please consider the fact that these people maybe wouldn't be so " arrogant " with you if you left your stereotypes apart. There are different people everywhere, don't expect to find more douchebags in France/Spain than in the US or any other country. As for racism, France is probably the country in Europe having one of the highest immigration rate.
It's all about being open minded. People won't talk to you the same way if you treat them the right way

What "cheap" when the money system just about everywhere is basically monopoly money being printed fast and faster to pay interest demands that could never exist in a honest-value system.
Even speaking practically, it's pretty expensive to live here.

Yeah and Arizona is the U.S. state with the highest immigration (legal and illegal) rates, yet it's racist as a motherfucker there.
Constantine - All I was saying is that the typical American impression of a snooty, pretentious frenchman is how I found most "middle-class +) people to be from Spain. I found them to be very rude, and not very nice, even when I was trying to do business with them.
Working class folks and the kids I had 0 problems with in regards to rapport.
Pouihi - Maybe things have changed or maybe I heard wrong; I can't at the moment source where that memory comes from but I remember learning about Portugese people just being really hard on Africans.
Maybe this was 20-30 years ago and its much less true now?
I've been all over spain Pouihi but never stepped foot in Portugal.

Before 1974 my country was under a fascist dictatorship and they started the Portuguese Colonial war which took place in Africa, and in that time, and under a fascist regime immigrants were not well received by the authorities and people in general have to abide by the regime's principles otherwise would be considered dissidents and put in jail or killed. So probably africans wouldn't be well received at that time by not by prejudice in people's minds.
In the 25th of April of 1974 (our liberty day) we had a revolution that took that regime down and brought democracy back (no one died on that revolution ).
I'm from 1984 and never noticed any abnormal prejudice towards african descendants. As I said, there are racists everywhere that's inevitable, but it's not hardcore or massively generalized, I'd say the USA look pretty worse on that matter.

I am not scared at all. Yes, the possibility exists that something can happen. However, I'm used to one of the most dangerous cities in the US. As long as you know what can happen, how to prevent an incident, and what to do in the event that something does happen, you'll be fine.
A lot of warnings are over-exaggerated too. I just had a traveler stay at my place a few weeks ago.. he lives in Kabul, Afghanistan. One of the nicest guys I've met in a while.

American guys really do get treated like gods in southeast Asia..
I'd still prefer somewhere like Buenos Aires because of the culture though.. they are a little more progressive than the asians.
When dating asian girls, you meet the family immediately. Almost as fast as you meet them is when they start nagging for marriage and grandchildren. Notice the word I used there.. "and". They want both. No exceptions. And they will annoy the shit out of you till they get their way.
Argentinians are much more laid back.
I love visiting the far east though
