I have no opinion either way on what the implications (or even the accuracy) of this story might be. I do intend to try to follow the story as it develops, however.

I read that the other day, but I decided not to post it until we get more details. Could be the smoking gun we were looking for or it could just be another false alarm only time will tell I suppose. It is very suspicious though.

You do realize that if they find it, those wacky libbies will say we planted it. So prepare your rebutles.

Yea. I know. If they do claim that it will be unfounded in fact and will be almost impossible to prove or disprove so I won't even bother with a rebuttal.

Yeah, I thought about waiting to see if it was just another hastily-tossed out soundbite prepared in order to "scoop" the competition (as has happened so often in the reporting of this war), but this particular report had a level of specificity lacking in the others. There's a lot of detail there, with enough references to past events and specific people that it should be possible to backcheck a lot of it fairly readily.
One thing that sounds fishy to me is this business about the gooey foundation in the area -- high water table and unstable clay soil substrate unsuitable for excavation. Why on earth would anyone expend so much time and money excavating in such an unsuitable location? Why not build an underground complex a few miles further away, and transport stuff between the two sites?
At any rate, I think it's worth keeping an eye on.

"They went through that site multiple times, but did they go underground? I never heard anything about that," said physicist David Albright, a former IAEA Action Team inspector in Iraq from 1992 to 1997.
so the inspections were working huh? Quote:
Hamza, an Iraqi nuclear engineer who defected from Iraq in 1994, testified before Congress last August that Iraq could have had nuclear weapons by 2005.
this guy spoke last week at Illinois Weslyan University, he said there that the only way to make sure that saddam didn't have WMD was to occupy the country. He was the first to say that the inspections weren't woking. I wonder why the UN didn't listen to him. i mean, he only headed iraq's nuclear weapons program for two decades.

Thanks for the link, PsiloKitten. According to that article, the inspectors had in fact been underground there, so presumably they had seen everything the marines had explored and felt there was no chance of the underground facility being used to develop nuclear weapons.

Its the lack of media attention on this that makes me think that it is real...
I mean, Sure their has been some news coverage but not nearly asmuch as you would think if this were the True Smoking Gun... Makes me think that the military is keeping people out so they can scrub off the "made in america" lables from the nuclear reactors and such..

-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.
