Northeast New Jersey Hunters: Rabid Animals in the Area, BE CAREFUL!
    #14507227 - 05/24/11 10:17 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I know I'm really late in the season, but I went hunting for morels in the Northeast Jersey area (Essex County) and encountered a fairly vicious rabid raccoon today in a local park.

I just wanted to let the New Jersey hunters in the Essex, Union, Somerset, Passaic, Union, Morris, Bergen, and Hudson counties know that rabid animals are around the area. If you see a raccoon during the day that looks mangy (meaning dirty looking or getting too friendly/close with humans, drooling, snarling or making funky noises), either turn and run or kill the animal if it attacks you. Raccoons seen during the day should ALWAYS be taken with caution, they are usually nocturnal animals. If they are out during the midday, something is probably wrong. Avoid them!

The raccoon my girlfriend and I encountered today was showing every symptom of a late stage rabies infection. Be careful out there guys, hunting mushrooms is not worth the painful and insanely expensive rabies treatment.

If you want the full version of my encounter click here. I won't lie, it's kinda long.

Mods: sorry for the cross-post but I figured anyone in the North East NJ area should be aware of what's going on. Rabid animals in your mushroom hunting area ain't nothin to fuck with.
