Tree oyster

It is 3 weeks now and it looks like my grain spawn has not grown. I can smell it through the plastic bag.
Is it because, the pasteurized straw is too wet? Or are there any other reasons?
I did pasteurize for 1-11/2hrs at around 70C.

what does your grain spawn not growing have to do with your pasteurized straw being too wet?

You mean it hasn't grown from the grain to the straw? In 3 weeks I would expect considerable if not full colonization. Unless the straw is totally soaked I wouldn't think that would prevent any colonization at all. I dunno pics might help.
EDIT: One other thought. Is the straw all loose or did you pack it down? You need to really pack straw down since it has so much loft on its own.

Yes, not colonized at all and i expected. I guess, it must be the wet straw. How do u drain your pasteurized straw?

You drain it on a rack until cool and then stuff it into whatever container you're using, along with spawn. The excess moisture will drain from the straw over the next few days out the holes you left in the bottom of the bag or tray, etc.
I doubt that's the problem though, unless it's swimming in water. RR

Probably lack of fresh air prevented the mycelium from growing, while the straw started fermenting after a few days.

Lack of fresh air, might be the case. Is it a absolute must to have a filter(perhaps cotton wool)for gas exchange in the plastic bag? For ive seen pics in the internet, where they dont have any at all.

I don't think so, constant air exchange is absolutely required.

you'll know if your tree oyster spawn is good cause it should have a most beautiful smell of aniseed.

So, that's it. There was no filter and sour smell enveloped the room. Now, im going to put cotton wool as a filter. Does it need to be soaked in rectified spirit?

dont use cotton as a filter it can harbor contaminates, use cheapo polyfill pillow stuffing, tyvek or filter disks.

Ive searched for polyfill, tyvek and filter disc and its difficult to get it while natural cotton is available everywhere.
Can i not soak it in bleach or rectified spirit or anything else?

Cotton tends to soak up moisture and will get nasty.

Thanks, looks like now, the best option is to look for the cheapest pillow somehow!
And since, ive done around 50 bags with natural cotton,is it ok to change the filter, which is in the top of the bag, in the lab? Its' been only around 4days now and the mycelium are growing in the bag. Or will it hamper them to contamination and just leave it as it is?

Hard to say really. Probably just use your best judgment. Is the cotton getting soggy? If it's dry it should be OK and you'd probably do more harm switching them out.
