North Jersey Hikers: beware, encountered a rabid raccoon today [Tale of my encounter included] * 1
    #14506983 - 05/24/11 09:27 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Today my girlfriend and I went hiking/hunting for mushrooms/taking pictures in a park in the South Orange/West Orange/Orange/Millburn New Jersey area. I was trying to see if morels were still up so we went straight to a creek. Upon coming close to the creek we saw a raccoon-- at 2:30 in the afternoon. Fucker started making a b-line for us, snarling and making weird ass screechy noises. He looked like a dog with mange. All other racoons I've encounter have been at night and they have a nice full, clean coat, kinda like cats. This raccoon had matted, gross looking hair with a few patches missing. It was obviously sick. We decided to run away because I've always been told to be weary of raccoons you see during they day... they're nocturnal animals that are almost always afraid of humans.

So we go about 100-150 yards up-stream, more than enough room between us and the crazy ass raccoon to be away from each other, especially with thick brush. So we're hiking, girlfriend's doin her thang taking pics of the river for her photography class, playing with shutter speeds and the flowing stream. I'm about 30-40 feet away from her when she just starts screaming and calling my name. I run back and see the mangy ass raccoon running at her. I grabbed her hiking stick and hit the fucker in the legs. He backed off and ran into a hole in the base of a tree.

When I went to check him out he started to come out showing teeth, drooling and snarling and making the weird ass screeching noises. He lunged at me so I went back and grabbed a rock that was about the size of a grapefruit and went back to look at it, fucker came out of the hole in the tree and lunged at me again, so I threw the rock at it and hit him in the dead center of the head. Honestly, I was amazed that I hit it, I've never been that great of a pitcher, but I guess when adrenaline is flowing you hone in on your abilities. Fucker instantly fell completely limp. I thought for sure he was dead.

Meanwhile, after being almost attacked my girlfriend called 911 to report a rabid animal because that was the only thing we could think of. We didn't know the exact location of the park so they were no help at all(her cell phone has GPS location on it, lot of good that did). I went to check on the raccoon about 5-10 minutes later and HE WAS STILL ALIVE, HE WOKE UP! It was making awful growling and snarling noises. I wanted to throw another rock to finish him off because I thought it was suffering but GF said no way.

We went about 100 yard away to try to look up some animal control/park services numbers on our cell but no one would answer. As we were trying to look stuff up, the raccoon just go up out of the hole and started doing his wobbly-wondering rabies walk around again. Some old guy came by on the trail so I ran over to warn him and he said he was leaving immediately. As soon as he walked away the crazy ass raccoon came back over a hill by the creek and was sniffing right where the dude was standing literally 2 minutes ago. It's like the thing was possessed. Eventually it ran away while making some horrible sounds and we never saw it again, but we made a point to warn everyone in the park about it.

So there you go, that's my tale of the rabid raccoon encounter.

TL;DR: Girlfriend and I almost got bitten by rabid racoon. Beat the shit out of it. It came back to life, tried to attack someone else. If you see a mangy looking raccoon during the day, either kill it or run. And find out who the hell you should call if you see one (hard to do in our case).

My girlfriend lives in that area-ish of NJ and I noticed a fuck ton of foxes out.  Typically when that happens it means the rabies went down for a lil bit, but it's gonna come back with a vengeance.  Scary shit and glad to hear you guys didn't get hurt.

edit: I think I actually know which park you're talking about.  I went there a week ago when I was tripping and she drove me there since it was near her house.  Thank god I didn't run into any rabbid raccoons.  A few very curious chipmunks, but no crazy coons.

This story would really freak out my girlfriend
She's afraid of racoons n things whether they're rabid or not, if that ever happened to us I think she'd be terrified of them.

My adrenaline was way too high to take any pics. No way I would have thought to take a picture or been in any condition to hold a camera steady.

also, while the raccoon does sound fucked up, seeing one in the day does not mean they are rabid.  They often go out in the day to look for bird eggs.

Yeah, I've seen them during the day a few times, especially in the evening. They always run from humans, never make a b-line for them, no matter how hungry they are.

I've met raccoons that are comfortable with people before and they just kinda saunter up to you like an unsure puppy. At the NE10 gathering they tried to raid our coolers, but if we got big and aggressive and yelled at them they ran away like scared dogs, just to come back 5 min later to try to steal our hot dogs again... but that was about 3 in the morning. This thing straight up charged while snarling and drooling and showing teeth in full sunlight. It wasn't right in the head.

That would have made for a great opening scene to a zombie movie.

Coons going crazy from rabies is not very common, usually they become timid, very unorganized, and look like retarded spasming creatures.  Only about like 5% of the time do they become dangerous like this.  YOU GOT LUCKY GUMBY!

Cool story bro.

imo, your girlfriend is mean for not letting you kill it.

It was definitely suffering, doomed to die and deserved the sweet release of death.

Best story ever.

And you can't call a woman mean for going along with her nature.  They nurture things damnit.  We kill stuff.

Imo, in this case, nurturing it would have been killing it.

I heard that from someone that I told the story to. "Maybe it was a zombie raccoon." Given how I pegged the fucker in the head with a big ass rock and it some how came back to life, I'd say that's a maybe. I mean hitting a person in the head with a rock of that size would have probably killed them, yet this thing got up and started again with the snarling and drooling. There was no reason it should have still been alive. Raccoons are much more vicious and resilient than I ever thought they were.
