Pf tek Reishi

Excuse me for double threading, but im not sure I got the information I needed. So im interested in growing ganoderma lucidum(reishi) pf tek style. So my plan was to follow RR's instructions, but instead of vemiculite, use sawdust. -Is this an effective way to grow reishi? Or should I just do it outdoors?(Im in subtropical area) -What type of sawdust would be best? Or would it be better to just use vermiculite? -Would I have to tweak the technique at all, other than using some different ingredients? -Would I inoculate the reishi spores into the jars just as I would with any other spores?
Thats all so far, thanks lots

pf tek style is not really a good way to grow woodlovers... it works, it's just not super efficient. For reishi, I prefer ordering mycelium that comes in a syringe (LC) or petri dish (not spores). From the myc, you can make your own petri, or squirt some myc onto some grain that has been PC'd, and grow out the grain jars. Then, mix the grain jars into a bag of wood shavings (hardwoods preferred...), some gypsum, rice bran, and maybe some straw and wood chips. This way, you will have a large block to grow from, and you won't be disappointed how little you get from a pf tek block. Good luck.

Thanks for the help, I basically know what to do for the technique you're telling me, but could you clarify a little bit around the edges? Im very new but very interested. I.E. One thing I was confused about was when you said squirt some of the myc on to some grain, is a specific grain better than others? Thanks much!

Rye is a good choice as its easy to get and cheap too. You can pick it up from you local health food store. Just use common sense and keep things clean, and transfer a bit of the liquid culture to your rye. Easiest way to keep it clean would be to make sure you are working in still air. Wear gloves and a breathing mask. Make sure to sterilize everything with alcohol ( wipe lids and jars immediately before opening them) and make sure to keep the time that jars are open as short as possible. Alot of people use a glovebox which is a good idea, but not totally necessary. I am no expert but with a little common sense you should be fine. Best of luck to ya man, Ive thought about doing this as well but I just don't have the time to dedicate to cultivating my own so I stick to the store for now lol. I'm hoping to someday come across some good edibles while I'm out searching but until then... Maybe if you have success I will give it a try.

It is amazing especially with all the great information on this site! You can learn so much from just searching and reading.. But yeah I was more talking about liquid culture to spawn a different substrate instead of the PF tek. From what I understand, the PF tek is mostly for active species and even then its not the best method, just recommended for beginners due to its simplicity. If I ever did get the time, I would probably try shitake or reishi so I would try using more suitable substrates.. but whatever you decide to do keep us posted man. It's everyone posting their experiences that make this site so great. Best of luck to you man!
