cyanara said: ok lets make things a little more confusing... you want your temps to be between 140-160 for a minimum of 60 minutes but no longer than 90 as you could supress benificial bacteria. DON"T start your time till it has acheived the minimum critical temp and obviously it's going to take 4x bags filled with Poo alot longer to reach set temps than a couple of small jars, so use your noggin and adjust accordingly.
So we are talking about forced cooling here? No?

thanks ryath... and no never force cool anything.. what I'm saying is if you have a big block of poo it's going to take longer for the center to reach the appropriate temps..

scatmanrav said: Its not really critical. I've used horse poo with no pasteurization dozens of times before. Dumping boiling water over it and letting it sit in a tub works too. Proper pasteurization is good if you want to be safe and sure, but its not a big deal.
"uh.. cause 90min isnt 120min of course! RR says 90min cause that is a safe zone between 60-120min, anything less or more it will not work."
Thats not correct, more or less will certainly work.
In science rules can be bent.
Thanks for the response. I am just trying to get the pasteurizing process down pat.

it's good to ask questions. try coir, or straw first.. something a little more forgiving so you can understand the process.

Hpoo was my first,no problems. Hpoo/coir 50/50 fail three times.
I'm back to hpoo and crossing my fingers. I just broke my promise and did a 50/50 yesterday.
I am trying to find a "happy medium".

follow this tek with and you'll be fine. Pulled 3.5g shy of 11oz cracker dry on my first flush. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13271608#13271608
seriously shortcuts lead to inconstant results and more often time failure

Thanks for the link. I've probably read it 30 or 40 times by now.
I just tried an oven roaster and it seems to work well but I don't see why you can't just slowly raise the temp to 150 F and let it "do it's thing" without water or bags in the roaster insert. I hope that works as I've done straight hpoo and 50/50 that way. This is the reasons for all of my questions.

besides mess, you can put the bags into a clean bucket and store away for use later if you can't get to it right this second. I used two giant pots and autoclavable bags.. i split the batch into 4 bags and it works wonderz.

I have a roaster with a removable insert tub. I just put the sub in there and heated it. There is an air to air transfer of heat to the sub.
Is this acceptable?

The heating mechanism doesn't make much of a difference so long as the substrate is not losing/gaining moisture and you maintain the 140-160F for 90-60 minutes. Keep in mind the temperature should be measured from the substrate, not the temperature setting on the roaster or other device.
I prefer heating water around a bagged substrate. I can get the water to hold at <180F and play on shroomery while the internal temp. gets up to par. Once it's 140F, I set my timer and go play some more on shroomery

OK, Heres what I did. I put my DRY hpoo in a pillow case, and then in 170f water for 60-70 mins. Took the pillowcase out and squeezed it, then drained in a strainer til it was at FC.
The water I pasteurized it in, and that came out when I was getting it FC is what my question was about.
So, when you guys say to put it in a bag, and heat to 160- or whatever variation your using- do you mean DRY HEAT i.e. oven? Otherwise, you'd NEED water, right?

OK, I see. Plastic bags... Gotcha, now. The TEK I found and used used a pillowcase- thats why I was confused...(ROADKILLS Hpoo TEK) I wish I had found PP's TEK. His advice hasen't done me wrong yet.
I agree. It IS the "simple" teks- the ones that are most written about- that are the most confusing. So much contradicting info.
What I wouldnt give for an updated version of TMC by Stamets. I wonder why he hasn't done it. Theres a lot of new TEKS that he could put in there- and make himself some coin at the same time!

besides Stamets moving beyond the scope of TMC, he even says it himself that people like us, (the Shroomery) are the backbone of Mycology. The art of mushroom growing morphs just like the mushrooms them self, and at an exponential rate, and the only way to keep info up to date are forums like this one.
