Can't Find Rye Berries in Florida

Hey guys,
I swear Ive been to ever nutrition store feed depot and whole store in my area and I can't find rye berries anywhere. Is there a specific store in Florida that sells them? If not what can I use in place of rye berries, I know there are other choices Rye berries just seem to be one of the most popular choices. Any information is appreciated!
Thank you in advance.

I had the same problem where I live (finding supplies) so now I just use WBS (Wild Bird Seed). It is cheap ($2/5lb @ food4less), easy to prepare, colonizes fast, and works just as well as any of the more expensive/harder to find grains that I tried when I was breaking in to this hobby. This site, others and Google will tell you everything you could ever want to know about using it as well.
BTW Personally, it irks me when I ask a question about on thing and someone else gives me an answer about something else but in this case its worth considering because it works so well. J

I think it is around 200 - 225g dry per quart jar. (filled 3/4 of the way)
I think you can get around 100 rye jars out of the 50lb bag. How much was it in Fl.?

No sweat man. Out of everything I have done in my life this was one of the more expensive hobbies for me to learn. Everybody basically does the same thing, a little differently; and if you stick with it long enough you will probably experiment with many different techniques/supplies before you find what system works best for you. Then its all good J

That is so funny Anarch, I cannot find a Whole Foods even remotely close that has them. I am going to order them online from Azure Farms, it is RR endorsed I believe, please do not hold me to it but I am almost 100% I have read a post in which he recomended them by name. It is also what he uses in his videos. They are a pretty fair price as well I might add.

Can probably get more then 100 jars out of a 50 lb bag, but if its expensive (it is for me too) but you like rye..try stretching it out with WBS. Use half bird seed, half rye. Or more rye if you want, or less..doesnt matter.
Not only is it cheaper then rye, its better then WBS alone, and I think better then rye alone. You get a nice mixture of different sized grains and different nutrients.

One with not so much cracked corn or sunflower seeds. Also one that has no air in it is a plus. I get some from a local grocery store with no corn and almost no air in the bag, so theres no dust. Makes shaking them very easy. Corn makes for mushy jars so less the better.

I special ordered a 50 lbs bag for 50 dollars and that is with the 10% discount lol. I didn't pay for it yet just ordered it so I might just go with bird seed seeing how cheap it is. How much better is Rye than bird seed? I've heard a lot of mixed opinions. It would be saving me a lot of money but then again I want quality over quantity.

I checked out azure farms too Pileus but the shipping is outrageous to get it to where I am. It was like 20 dollars for a 50lbs bag but the shipping was like 50 dollars itself. There was 2 options for shipping 1 for Drop Number and one for UPS. They told me that they don't have any drop numbers in Fl but hopefully they have one where you're from so you don't have to pay the crazy shipping fee.

Yeah, there are DEFINATELY cows here.. they are everywhere. I could find Rye Grass everywhere but that is different from Rye berries the Rye Grass is a lot smaller. I seriously tried every organic health nutrition store I could think of.. I did say "Rye Berries" instead of "Rye Grain" or "Winter Rye" but then again I was in the store myself and I personally looked and didn't see anything. Is it worth it to buy the Rye Berries over the WBS?

Rye is not really available along the coast at feedstores. It doesn't grow well here and Sorghum (aka Milo) is grown as a replacement for feed purposes. There are some grows using Milo which suggest that it isn't too different than rye. Hard wheat and popcorn are also cheap alternatives along the coast usually.

I think in my Area (central east of florida) I have seen them sold as "Winter Wheat Berries" I have seen another variety called "Red Winter Wheat Berries". Organic at $1.18 a pound. Not bad, but probably not as cost effective as Bird seed. But then the argument of "Better" Ensues...
Wouldn't your product benefit from being certified organic? Ranging from flavor, quality of grain, consistency in: grain texture, max moisture content, cooking time, colonization. Also being an actual human food edible grain does hurt either. You just don't find any good birdseed salad recipes!
Any way, that to me makes a good argument why Rye Berries are better choice.

This is true I think ill just try them both and see for myself to be honest. I'll conduct a little experiment.

If you're paying that much, then you might as well use rye. The alternatives I mentioned can be had at $5-20 per 50 lb bag depending on location and grain.

$70 for 100 quart jars of rye substrate sound slike a good deal to me. Especially since it can colonize so fast and you have a perfect tutorial on how to do it with RR tek.

Good job, now that's a better price
I was thinking about what Mycowlogist said>

I chose organic rye berries because they were food grade and because I was told that feed grade rye possibly was sprayed with fungicides and other things to keep it from going bad while stored. The fungicides obviously would not be a good thing. But this all set me up to think that I should be careful about what I use as spawn and as a substrate (re.toxins). I don't think it needs to be human food quality, I don't eat wood much or any poo that I know of for that mater or know of any good recipes either. But I do think it important to consider the materials used and what they might contain.

Now at that price I would have to rethink things a bit. $0.34@lb vs. $1.00@lb. I think a trip to the feed store is in order, to do a bit of investigating. Thanks

Milo, millet and WBS all work well. I dont use rye most of the time these days, unless I'll shoot spores into the jars. Then I use 50/50 rye/WBS. I use a WBS as I said from a grocery store, its a bit more money, but its very good quality, no corn, about 10% sunflower seeds, and no dust. Look around and try some, youll find some that will work fine for you.
