I've got a laser unit from a barcode scanner. Actually I have the entire scanner, minus the casing
My question is, does anyone know of some resources I could use to find specs and such on the unit i have?

It connects to an RS232/1 port on a POS system built like a laptop.
Is an RS232/1 port the same as a serial port? They look the same...

Think so, the serial port is used for many things and the wiring of the connecting cable is often different. Connect it up and see if you can hyperterminal into it.

They kind that plug into a keyboard simply inserts the numbers from the barcode as keystrokes. I would assume that the kind you have will transmit the numbers on the serial port as ASCII text.
As suggested, plug it into your serial port, run hyperterm (start -> programs->accessories->communications) and connect to that serial port, then scan something with the wand. You will probably see the numbers show up as text. Hyperterminal isn't always installed by default... you might have to use add/remove programs to install it from your windows cd... or use unix and run tip instead of windows and hyperterm)

Well ther is no wand, this is part of a stationary scanner that was built onto the back of a POS computer.
I tried plugging it into the serial port on my computer but no luck. The unit gets ALL it's power from the serial port (+12V i'm guessing) but when i plug it into the port on my computer it doesn't get any power or turn on at all.
