Was hoping to bypass that build. However; if necessary, ill try my hand at making spore prints within one... when the time comes (hopefully).

Making a SAB should be pretty easy to do. Then you can stretch your mycelium a 100 fold.

Working with agar is way down the line, in my new Mycology adventure. Probably not until after I've built a clean-room with a flowhood... However; I definitely will need to make spore prints and then make up some spore syringes, long before that point. If I can do both in a cheap-ass, tossed together, still air box... Then I'm definitely going to reread those TEKs Eh, I'll reread them, regardless!

yup.
you can pour agar and take prints in a glovebox as long as you follow a sterile and quick procedure. it also helps to go through the motions a few times to get the hang of it so that when it comes time to pour agar, it will be much easier.
as long as no air can get into the box, and you have sterilized the inside with rubbing alcohol and some spray disinfectant (and given time for the spray to settle, about 15-20 minutes), you will be good.
get the hang of a glovebox down before thinking about a flowhood. they cost all of $10 to build and will allow you to perfect a sterile procedure that a flowhood is a useless without.

So far, my temps seem to be staying between 71~75degF. Now I just need to not mess with them for a week, lol.

The trick is to start more jars so your mind won't be on them

One of my 5-grain cakes/jars is about 90% colonized!... with cobweb
One of my best colonizing rye cakes/jars is also growing teal colored crap, up near the surface
Still have four of each, though. So here's to hoping for some future success

My first 1/2 pint cakes are doing well Of the remaining 8 of 10; seven are 90~100%. Not sure what is up with the eighth one; it looks healthy, but there is a section void of growth. I assume there may be some contamination I can not recognize going on in there... I'll probably let them ALL sit for another two weeks, to fully consolidate; yes? . . . . .

Same order, just rotated 180deg:
. . . . . I'll be keeping a close eye on those two "slower" jars... I'll assume they are tainted if I don't see any growth in those areas soon.

no signs of contams, as far as i can see. if there are any, you will realize soon enough.
nothing to worry about.
let them finish and consolidate.

Anyone else have an educated observation to share?
Will the near fully colonized jars be okay for another two weeks? Or do you think I'll have to birth them sooner?

I would birth them sooner. Around 7 days after they hit 100%....

I do see what appears to be a few micro-pins in two jars. Furthermore; seems the substrate has shrunk quite a bit... Think I should birth and soak?... Or wait until Monday?... I'll be gone from Friday afternoon til Sunday Evening... Hmmmmmmmmm...
