So for a long time I was nothing and didnt care about religion or spirituality or atheism. Then life changes nudged me in the direction of the 'new age' mumbo jumbo; I quickly got away from that and went to world religions then finally to Occultism and Philosophy. Just recently I have most been able to identify my self as a Theosophist, which isnt really a religion, and that is where I am at today.

Aren't they not allowed to eat cows under Hinduism, in a country that is starving?

Well. I don't think the laws of ancient times really apply to current times. So "picking and choosing" is perfectly valid when the laws don't really apply to the modern world (e.g. not eating pork).

Other than that, if people REALLY followed what Christ taught, the world would be a much greater place! Selflessness, love, ridding yourself of jealousy/coveting/desires...

The simple fact is that most Christians are nothing like Jesus.

I also don't think value systems used in western societies just occurred naturally. I think they came from Christianity and over generations permeated from the church into secular culture at large.

It could very well be an obsolete system. Still, in today's world with capitalism running wild and anti-social thinkers openly preaching the gospel of unmitigated greed and moral nihilism, I think it may be hasty to abandon it altogether. If you are going to bash on Christianity then you should target its failures as a moral torchlight for humanity rather than its mythology, which is merely incidental (unless you, personally, believe in fairy-tales).

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention that the New Testament is extraordinarily liberal with regards to "the old laws." Basically, you get to pick and choose. All that's demanded is that you believe in the power of personal sacrifice and in the golden rule. The Christ mythology serves only to reinforce these essential values. And given how many non-Christians think Jesus was an awesome guy and an exemplary role model, it seems to work pretty well.

This undermines that the bible is the word of God. Jesus also said:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."

So, good ol' Jesus willl lay the smackdown if you eat shellfish or give women any power.

That whole you get to eat anything you want is a St. Paul thing.
Basically, the bible is mess.

I'll come right out and say it, Hinduism is fucked-up. There's a lot about it that's pretty cool and exotic, but it's interwoven with the rigidly conservative Indian caste system that for millenia has kept the black man down.

Jesus also said that the meek shall inherit the earth, so this thing about being "called least" in the kingdom of heaven seems like a riddle to me. He certainly never said that breakers of Mosaic law would be cast into the fire with the hypocrites.

There are many Hindu sects that reject the caste system, just as there are many Christian denominations who reject homophobia and exclusivism.

I think the Bahai faith has a crucial social role in (maybe some day possibly) ending absurd bickering and battles about which religion is "right" or which religion is "better".

I can't believe it isn't obvious to more people argueing their angry opinions with eachother that they're completely contradicting themselves by getting mean and nasty towards their brethren.

But the problem with the church hyenas has roots a lot deeper than the preacher they listen to. As perverse and unnatural as this world is, throats are bound to be slashed in the name of the Lord, Ronald Regan, or Oprah.

Just drop it people! Exit the jungle of arguable literature and learn how to feel the differences of right and wrong, and the rewards and benefits of listening to your heart and acting on it.

^^Isn't that the best place to start a growing human being? Do we really need to be throwing mystic symbolic stories at 6 year olds whose biggest concern is how to sneak a few cookies under their pillow before bedtime?

So why would God create a situation where you need to answer a riddle to receive his love? What if he created you stupid? So either I can do whatever the hell i want, for instance rape a baby, but if I accept Jesus I'm good to go to heaven. But if I lead an awesome life, but denounce Jesus, I'll go to hell. There is no such unconditional love in the bible.

All of this is true - according to St. Augustine, who did not write the Bible and who IMO was a hack.

The Bible doesn't even say anything about Hell unless you choose to interpret it a certain way. It certainly never says "and you're gonna be tortured for like, ever, dude." Most of these doctrines came after its writing, and we now take them for granted because of their widespread acceptance by mental midgets.

New International Version (©1984)
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."-Revelation 21:8

How else CAN this be interpreted...remember, the ENTIRE bible is suposed to be from God, so this is from the horses mouth.

I take that to mean that your name and influence in the world will die along with your body, and your personality will be lost to the sands of time. I mean, shit, if you sleep around and have lots of babies with strange women then you will not be able to raise them with your own values and ideas, and after you die it will be like you never existed except as a faceless drone. This is the "second death."

And the "Word of God"? Let's be honest here, the Bible was written at a time when being able to pass down information that would survive fully intact longer than two generations represented God-like power.

You can interpret this type of language any way you like, and you yourself seem to be adhering to a fundamentalist interpretation which reinforces your preconceived and non-constructive denunciation of Christianity.

So you do not believe it is the word of God? So you and I are talking mythology here, right? I think denunciation of christianity is productive considering the damages it has done.

I think that Christianity laid the foundation for secular society as we know it today, and that blanket denunciations of such a thing are not constructive unless you are a tribal anarchist. (If that's the case, I apologize for my prior assumptions.)

Certain interpretations and movements under the umbrella of Christianity have done incalculable human and cultural damage, it's true, so you should denounce those rather than the endeavor as a whole. In the 20th century alone, areligious movements have killed hundreds of millions, so I think it may not be useful to assign the blame for human bloodthirstiness to religion.

As for God? The Bible itself isn't really clear on what God "is," and neither are any of us. I believe God is in all of us and all around us, so both of us are speaking the word of God. Where's the truth? Only you can decide.

I identify most with Naturalistic Pantheism.

I think the appeal is it's rational approach to the universe. I tend to dislike religions based on blind faith and particularly abhor proselytism. I find Eastern religions/ philosophies fascinating, probably because they promote critical thinking and self-evaluation.

I love learning about all religions, mostly from an anthropological perspective.

You bet. It's specially interesting when husbands set their wives of fire on account of not paying their marriage portion.
