wbs going too fast?
    #14501471 - 05/23/11 09:23 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I made some wbs jars and follows doc's wbs tek. I did everything i was suposed to do. I used a still air box to inoculate. I was very sterile as far as i can tell. So now to the point.

I pc'd 9 jars but only ended up using 7 when i inoculated. The other 2 I sat to the side. Today (4 days later) i took a look at the 7 that I inoculated with a syringe of ms treasure coast and saw a few spots where it looked like it was starting to colonize in most of the 7 jars.

4 days seems too fast for a ms syringe to begin doing its thang, doesn't it?

Now for the mind fuck ... I decided to check the other two jars that I didn't inoculate. And found litttle white spots in that too! Oh noes! So I decided to give those two a few tilts and see whats going on. Of course it appears that its growing fast.

So now im doubting if the 7 jars i nocc'd up are good or contaminated. Im a little hesitant to stir the ones that could be good because I dont want to slow the growth. And it doesnt seem like the possible good 7 jars are growing as fast as the contaminated ones.

As a note, i didnt remove the foil from the 2 and it was a lot more moist in them than the ones i nocc'd.

Any thoughts? (uploading pics now)

I've had 2 day germinations. Pics would help but 4 days is not abnormally quick. Sounds like you didn't PC thoroughly enough but pics would definitely help discern.

Oh and:

How long did you PC for, what PSI, how did you inoculate (flame sterilize till red hot?), and temps that they are germinating in?

pc'd at 15 psi for 60 min. Flame sterilized every other jar. They have been sitting at 80 degrees

WBS=Weak Bull Shit

You did an awesome job on the moisture content on the jar in that pic it looks like, did you use gypsum?

The myce looks ok to me, also, from what I can gathered by your picture.  4 days from germination from a MS inoculation is a good thing.  Congratulations, you'v stumbled upon a heavily, clone worthy sub-strain of mycelium.

3 things you could do to rest easier at night.  PC grain jars for 90 minutes at 15psi, flame sterilize your needle until red hot between each inoculation, lastly, 80F is a high colonization temperature.  Molds spores and fermentation are encouraged to germinate at those temps and myce growth is stifled.  Bump your colonization temperatures down a few degrees into the room temperature range, 70-75F.

world's best spawn.

Fixed.  It's really a matter of opinion, but many commercial mushroom farms use millet for spawn.

Yep, go to your local grocer and find some bulk (weigh it yourself) mushrooms in the produce department.  Look around the bases of the stipes and you'll notice little pieces of millet stuck here and there.

Yeah it looks like ok but that picture isn't amazing. Do the two jars that are contaminated resemble the same appearance?

Im stuck with room temp of 80 unfortunately. No gypsum. I wasnt sure if the water content was good or not. I tossed a bunch of paper towels with the grain to dry it out faster after the soak/simmer/rinse. Worked wonders! The contam jars look like cobweb mold in places

Personally I never use gypsum. If you learn a good technique for grain prep, gypsum becomes an unnecessary additional step.

Can you get a pic in that resolution of the inoculated jars? Hold camera back (unless it's a phone) and zoom in a bit.

The foil covering the lids kept the WBS from drying out by blocking off their gas exchange ports so no air has been able to make it's way into the jars and make contact with the moisture content to evaporate it.  Once you remove the foil from the jar lids, whether you inoculate or not, they'll begin drying up.

I would also like to post up in defense of the WBS.  WBS is a great grain spawn.  I would say that anyone who posts other wise doesn't have their WBS prepping method down.  This denotes a huge lack of understanding of the WBS mix.

For quart jars, when cultivating cubesis, I like to use WBS then transferring the WBS, once fully colonized, to large bags of sterilized rye.  I find that WBS breaks apart easier than rye once full colonization is reached in the jars over rye if you so happen to let them go a week or 2 into colonization.

Enigma WTF are you talking about,I use wbs and it colonizes plenty fast and my tubs flush full canopies. Hell after I soak and simmer/boil for grain prep I don't even let it steam for 1minute in the strainer so the shts still kinda wett before I bag it or put it in jars to get pc'd and the shit still colonizes hella fast. MS, Lc and agar all comes out really good, wbs is the shit if you ask me.

I neither use gypsum in grain prep but do use it in substrate mix.
