What am I doing wrong.
    #1450166 - 04/11/03 04:49 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Does anyone know why the only shrooms which have caps of any decent size (1cm + in diamenter) are resting on the surface of the vermilite? They are upturned and you can see their gills. All the normal looking ones seemed to have stopped growing and some are going little blue.

There is this massive white mound still growing as well. It looks like one massive stem about an 1inch square.

IThis is my first time growing I bought kits from potseeds.net to practice before trying it in my own.

Should I harvest them all and wait for next flush?

They are getting light from the window (but not direct sunlight) At least 10 hrs + a couple of hours (2-4) artifical light. Does it matter if the lighting is intermitANT?

I am heating them frim below with a reptile mat (25 degrees C) .

Humidity seems high, there are load of small water droplets condensing on the sides.

Caps begin to upturn when the mushrrom reaches maturity. These are no good for spore prints, as they have already deposited their spores. They are fully mature. Unless you see a large amount of "white fuzz" at ther base of the stem, or the mushrooms appear to be very thick (fat ass) then I would guess your rH is ok, as long as your substrate isn't soaked, and your caps aren't slimey. To my knowledge some kits lack nutrients, which could be the reason why you have grown weak shrooms. Move on to bigger and better methods

Dont worry I intend too.

when I say upturned I dont mean inverted, I mean upside down!

Excuse my ignorance, what do you mean by rH?

rh=Relative Humidity. If your mushrooms are on the perlite, the have upturned, which may look like they are "inverted". It is just due to the mushrooms natural lifecycle. My dawg says you may need to watch your shrooms more closely, when the veil breaks (in order to produce spore prints), or avoid upturning. But then again if you are looking for potentcy just before the veil breaks drives the cainines wild....

not sure on humidity?
they on heat mat I misted at beginning and now there's a pool of water undrer the tray.

Is it bad to have water just standing there?
Should I add some perlite so there is no water sloshing about?

can it be too humid when they are fruiting?

I know I keep asking load' s of bloody questions but you've got to try havn;t you? (you don;t need to answer that one!)

Your exact setup needs to be explained more  Pooling water is a bad thing, and invites contams. Can you please explain your exact kit. And if your using verm, or per? That would give us all a better idea of whats going on.

As for humidity, it is possible to have too much, as in too much resulting in pooling.

My set up is Two ready to grow kits (Cubanis) they are in black plastic trays and come with clear plastic bags with little white air filter, I got them misted them as instructed , sealed up bags and kept warm and gave ambient light.

I Cant tell what the substrate is made out of, all looks the same to me!

But I've got some perlite kicking around so thought I could use this to o soak up any pooling water whilst still keeping humidity high

I am thinking of harvesting tomorrow, although it looks pretty disapointing. Don,t want to waste the lot though as there seem to be quite a few aborts (caps are going dark blue/black) worried rot will contaminate future babies.

when the growth stops and the cap goes black pluck it out of there, you've aparently done a little reading into the the subject....a couple of rotting friuts can do some harm to the entire organism.....

Try not using a heating pad. Warmth is good for colonization, not fruiting.

Thanx, you guys are most helpful.

I've stopped using the heating pad (IT WAS GIVING OFF 35 DEGREE C). The big white lump I picked when broken up, had the texture of a mushroom stem (long fibres) but inside it was a pale blue colour, didn't look mould. I am now drying and the blue has become a dark grey.

Do you think this is just bruising/oxidisation, it looks quite similar to when you pick fresh liberty caps, (just thought it a little odd thet the colouring was only on the inside? Does anyone no a resons why I shouldn;t eat the whilt lump (it had no cap and was 4x4x3 cm)?
