ṣūfī whirling & Dhīkr this thursday

i just got to my parents house. my Mum and i have been getting closer than we have ever been these past few weeks since i have been staying there. she has asked me to accompany her to Maṣjīd this Thrusday. they are having a whirling & Dhīkr ceremony and my mum will be hosting the chants for the women Muṣlimīah. she usually reads a sūrah as well but this time she has asked me to do it with her. i am very nervous, i will have to go in ḥijāb & abāyah for the first time in a long time.
i said yes, i want to do it for her, and i watched her face light up with a wonderfully proud glow. she grabbed me in her arms and pulled me close and held me like i was her baby again. it made me feel good to make her feel this way. with all the talk of religion in the Pub lately i figured i would share with you the sūrah that we have picked out. it has been my favorite since i was a little girl. i am in no way a scholar or devout Muṣlimīah. i would just like to present you this in plain text/ english transliteration.
Sūrah 92: al-Lail (the Night)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it draws a veil!
And the day when it shines!
And the creating of the male and the female! —
Your striving is surely (for) diverse (ends).
Then as for those who gives and keeps thy duty,
And accepts what is good —
We facilitate for him (the way to) ease.
And as for those who considers themself self-sufficient,
And rejects what is good —
We facilitate for them (the way to) distress.
And wealth will not avail them when they perish
Surely Ours is it to show the way,
And surely Ours is the Hereafter and the former
So I warn you of the Fire that flames.
None will enter it but the most unfortunate,
Who rejects (the truth) and turns thy back.
And away from it shall be kept the most faithful to duty,
Who gives wealth, purifying themmself,
And none has with them any boon for a reward,
Except the seeking of the pleasure of Allah, the Most High.
And they will soon be well-pleased.

So what nationality is your family?

Interogations up in this motherfucker.
I find Qur'an passages to be quite poetic. I wish I could read Arabic, I have an English/Arabic version of the Qur'an that I like to read while blazed.

How do you know Ellen? Were you with her on March 16, 2009?

That's an interesting mix. Do both your parents retain their respective cultures, or has one adopted the other's?

my mum is fluent in arabic & urdu as well as english. i only know little bits and can make out written words of arabic from growing up around it but nothin special. usually just stuff that pertains to Islam from having Qur'ān studies and stuff when i was little. but im basically just an american. im usually pretty shy to talk about that sort of stuff i just avoid the subjects so i dont have to deal with criticisms. i struggle myself with belief in religion/God and what not. but i do respect it and appreciate spirituality

there is a lot of spirituality in ṣūfīsm. Muraqāba is a type of ṣūfī meditation and one of my personal favorite aspects. i have praticed it some as a kid and reverted to it at really dark times in my life. the times that i did practice it brought me a great sense of tranquility and peace. it really helps to reset my mind and clear it of anger, saddness, & distress. i only wish i could practice regularly rather then just in times of great dispair
