Factors affecting speed of colonization of pf- jars!
    #14498568 - 05/23/11 11:25 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, so my pf-jars went quite weird after inoculation. They showed the first signs of mycelium about 3 or 4 weeks after the spores entered. I mean it's really long and I wonder what caused this delay. Here are some factors that might give you the idea of my situation:
- Jars are a bit too big (300ml) and more tall than wide
- I am not using any incubator, I just kept them in a dark place in 24 degrees.
- My spore syringes were kinda weird. I ordered them and it was not full black of spores. Only when you put it against the light you could see these small black particles.

What do you think was the most important factor that caused this delay? Should I build an incubator and increase the temperature? What do you think?

ive had spores take that long before. i think it has to do with how old the spores are.

and maybe the moisture content and temp of your jars.

idk Celsius and im too lazy to google.

get the right jars and try again

Spore syringes don't need to be dark...if you can still see something when you held it up against the light that's still a shit load of spores.

I wouldn't bother incubating it...if you've got more jars, I would just do another batch with a new syringe.

but it could a myriad of factors...the spores could just be old like k00laid said, or your brf mixture might've been too wet(and it needed the 3-4 weeks to dry to the right moisture level), or there might be a contaminant that stalled growth(and it died out so now the spores can start colonizing), or your brf mixture might've been too compacted (not fluffy enough).

If you don't have more jars, I highly suggest these:

you'll have enough containers that if this were to happen again, it'd be no biggie, just start another batch and hope the weird batch would eventually fully colonize.

The website description doesn't mention the type of plastic, but it doesn't matter as they mention that these containers are good to use up til 250 degrees fahrenheit (which is excellent).

Once I get some extra dough (in between jobs right now) I'm def ordering these fuckers.

Sorry to hijack the thread.
