Deep fried mushrooms

A friend of mine called me not to long a go and told be he dropped 25 g of fresh shrooms in to a deep fryer and then munched them up. Said he tripped good for 4 hours at a level 3. I say he's a liar... I believe that exposing to that kind of heat would destroy any psychoative properties. Has anyone tried this?

It would destroy some active alkoloids, but compared to boilling for five minutes this may be less detrimental due to the short amount of time needed to fry things. Did he make a batter or drop them straight in?

He said he rolled them around in some flower and then dropped them in. He told me they still tasted a little bad, but it was bearable.

He should have made a beer batter. mmmm, beer. the flour would have provided a semi-barrier to help disperse the heat. A beer batter would disperse the heat much better and if done correctly would hardly heat the mushroom at all. Very hot oil and nice thick batter drop in for a minute or two until golden brown.

That sounds good man. You could dip them in some ranch dressing or horseraddish sauce. If you have plenty of freshies i would say its worth a try.

dude, hot oil is way hotter than boiling water, i don't believe it. I remember reading that most fryers get up to 350F, maybe even 400F.

Just because oil is hot does not mean the mushroom is. That would be the point of the batter to serve as a buffer for the heat. Duration is key as mushrooms in tea must be allowed to soak for a while to extract the psilocybin and what is left of the psilocin and during this process the shroom is heated to a point where much of the psilocin will be oxidized as heat increases oxidation. Psilocybin should not be affected as it is a relatively stable molecue compared to psilocin.
