I use Ableton Live on PC with a Firebox interface, M-audio Keystudio, M-audio Triggerfinger, Event TR-8 monitors, and all kinds of software synths and effects.

Check out the link to my music in my signature.  I'm still learning but always having fun.  Hit me up if you have any questions.

I just have a shitty casio tonebank and an Mbox interface through either ableton or FL studio or pro tools... Most of my power is in software/VST/RTAS.. :awesome:

I use Ableton Live, with an Oxygen49 midi keyboard and a Monome.

Simple but powerful.

Search for Mr. Bills Tunes (maybe with Ableton in the seach box too) hes got some great stuff.  He posts lots of free stuff but he also has a pay account that gets you even more stuff.  You can just pay for a month and then download it all and cancel it after.  I've even heard him condone that lol.  But he does update so its worth keeping for a while.

Also search Tom Cosm.  He also has some great info and videos.

READ THE ABLETON LIVE MANUAL!!!  Can't say this enough.  Leave it by the pot and read while your doin' your bidnezz.  You will for sure learn something out of there that you didn't know.  I will guarantee that.  Short cuts are great in Ableton so learn those too.

Also remember sometimes there are multiple ways to get the same outcome or minor changes that make a huge difference in the sound.  Experiment all the time and you will never get bored.

Never hurts. I've always played a (very)little guitar but you don't need it necessarily. Maybe at least an understanding of scales and chord progressions would help make things sound cohesive. I found once I got a keyboard it was easier to understand music. The keyboard gives you a good visual to notes and their relations.

It doesn't even -really- matter if you know theory at all with electronic music, it can be fairly atonal so you can always just play what sounds good... but taking your music to the next level... it would be pretty helpful to know chord progressions, scales and what not. Especially writing longer more harmonious compositions.

I use Ableton Live and a few plugins... m-audio fasttrack as my audio box (it's a piece of junk actually).
oh, and shitload of weird percussion instruments.
You can check out a song I just finished here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14501266

spiz, like the others said, learning a little piano is helpful but not essential.
You don't need to become a seasoned professional; but just knowing your scales, arpeggios, and chords is nice.

Good luck.

yea iv bought a midi key board and stuff njust need to knuckle down and try learn some shit on it when ever i get a chance. i think once u learn to play it would also be easier to come up with stuff and u can just jam by yourself and see what u can conme up with.

what soft/hardware synths u guys use? only one i really use is the free 3xosc which has pretty basic sound but under heavy effects can come up with some cool sounds

Spiz, pick a program that works best for you.
Live is very popular and flexible (and what I use). Other people like Cuckos Reaper for it's ease of use and constant updates.
If you're on a mac, Logic is the most popular choice. If FL studio works for you, keep using it.

After that, the best advice I can give is to NOT purchase/download a lot of plugins.
Learn to use the native plugins in your DAW software. Master them.
Then, when you do decide to buy some plugins, just buy a couple VERY good ones, and learn to use them to their full potential.
Too many people become 'vst whores', and never actually tap into what their software is capable of.

As for hardware, You'll probably want an audio interface next.
This will speed up the latency on your audio and make it sound better. (Eventually, you can also purchase a microphone to use with it too.)
Start cheap. Buy an inexpensive interface to begin with. Make equipment updates as you need them.
Read product reviews and find one what works best for you and your budget.

:imwithstupid:

Good point about vst whore.  My roommate has a million and he just flips around through them and makes noises.  I laugh every time.  I've slimmed mine down to about 4 or 5.

an audio interface is what like an external sound card? does this just help with hardare synths etc or does this improve soft synths as well? sorry for dumb questions haha

Yep its an external sound card. Takes a load off your computers CPU.  Also allows for you to hook up hardware, monitors, headphones, all kinds of stuff.  Go cheap at first and work your way up like someone already said.
