I think it's hilarious when someone fucks with them though. Half of the staunchly religious (any religion) people I've met don't even have a clue as to why they believe as they do.

We would be a lot better off with no religion at all, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon it is true. But a lot of the Xtians I've met have been very nice people. Of course, there are some psychos there as well.

Nah, it's deeply rooted brain washing. Some of them are crazy (in the medical sense), but not all of them.
Religion is brainwashing. Fanatical religion is mental illness.

they just haven't realized that belief itself is irrelevant. It's not easy to penetrate through the many layers of conditioning that have built up throughout one's life. Especially when many are put in place while the person is still young and highly impressionable.

The energy given off by people forcing their beliefs on others makes me want to dive through a window to escape, I can't help but act impossibly nervous when they start talking to me about it, it makes me feel like they're just going to follow me forever until I accept what they believe. 10 years ago they scared me a lot less and I would tell them how I liked to worship satan or a gobstopper, whatever seemed to offend them more, explaining at some point that I was just returning the offensive favor.

buddha's words were just as manipulated as jesus' words. it sad to see such people misinterpret the meanings and use them for their own fulfillment.

Yeah, I agree. Johavas witnesses are bad for that, atleast where I am. Every sunday, I get a knock at the door. Usually when footballs on. My solution? Open your window and blast ''chased through the woods by a rapist''. It's been 7 months and they haven't come back since. Here's hoping for another 8

Actually, that's a pretty popular misconception. The bible is not the word, but infarct it is the bird who is the word.
Hope that helps!
also, the whole Buddhist thing makes you come off a little pretentious... I'd look into that.

I personally count myself as religious, but fundamentalists really get on my nerves. I also hate when people make really bad arguments for God's existence.

I think the problem, at it's root, is semantics and the inherent limitations of the human language. Everyone has their own way of expressing their own truth from their own experiences. We are all born into different reality tunnels where we stray to different ideologies. For example, I was born on liberal Long Island where I was an atheist for the majority of my life. For many years I vehemently argued anyone who was "religious" or believed in "God."
I try not to put labels on myself or anyone else anymore because I really don't think my ideas fit into any one category. Huxley's Perennial Philosophy points out that a degree of truth can be found in all religious traditions. This is not to be confused with the dogma expounded by the various religious institutions set up in such religions names.
In short, believe what you want. Try not to reinforce the believer-disbeliever dichotomy because it is in essence the verbal minority part of the spectrum. Don't let you upbringing close your mind to new possibilities in a search for truth (whatever that is to you) in this world.

it's not just the Catholics, it's every religious belief, buddhism, atheism, all of them. buddhists are killing non believers in many parts of the world, sri lanka is the most well known because that's where the 'holy war' is
That's very true. There was a time, in Tibet, when buddhism considered the Bon-po to be heretics and pulled a '' witch hunt '' on them.
it still goes on

think, many of these people were told to love God and praise Jesus before they were even old enough to talk. literally their whole lives they were fed the same lie over and over and over again until it became fact.
it's sad...but the parents think they're doing their children a favor because the parents were raised the same way! it's mass brainwashing at its finest. the best part? the people are WILLINGLY brainwashed...AND they pay them!!
what a scary system...all because people are too afraid, too weak, too insecure to believe in the power of themselves.

Deeply religious people do disturb me, but so do fanatics on the other end of the spectrum. Fanaticism and craziness are pretty similar.

I wish I was spoonfed those lies. Not all of us grew up in deeply religious families. I've been raised to be skeptical of everything, and to question everyones motives. Though it's a pretty good philosophy, I fell left out by the fact I've never been able to believe in god. It's an experience I've never been able to experience. Try as I might.

Fuck religion. The bible can be used for archeological purposes. Things in the bible exist physically. Ever watch The Exodus Decoded? http://youtu.be/c9-ynYEJolI
I find it pathetic that because a person does not believe in God that they dismiss the bible as a complete lie, when there is archeological proof.

do you think it could possibly be genetic? maybe a little bit? I know they are doing tests and have theories that their is a "god" section of your brain, which evolved to allow one to have a sense of "infinity" and that life was somehow eternal in order to ease the amazingly high stress associated with the conscious thought of death. This later got interpreted 100 million different ways and now we have Christianity.
Like, my dads side of the family has never been religious, and neither are any of the kids. But my moms side is highly religious.. are some people just more prone to siding with what feels right?
kind of how anger and other emotions gets the best of some people who just act on instinct and feeling, coming from the most basic and first evolved portions of the brain, not the most outter and most recently evolved part of the brain.
/stoned ramble didnt review hope make sense.

Are you referring to the experiment where researchers used powerful magnetic fields?
Either way, I doubt it's genetic. It's only bbeen in the last 100 years or so, that atheists-non religious people have been emerging. I know it was the social norm, but you'd think there would be a few more recorded atheist prior to the 1900's. I do think however, that it is our apriori need to use reason and cause and effect to 'build' the world around us, that drives us to draw illogical conclusion in the absence of scientific explanations. That and the familiarity effect. (whatever is familiar s correct)
