The Search for Ovoids: Part -2
    #14495577 - 05/22/11 07:03 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've been exhausting the parks in the local area, so today I took some drives to four separate locations. Unfortunately they didn't seem susceptible to ovoids, so I didn't stay very long at any of them.

1. Panus conchatus? Two separate locations, but I believe they're the same.

2. Gymnopus sp. (subsulphureus? earleae? I wish i got a shot of the gills)

3. Phaeomarasmius erinaceellus? Growing directly from the log. My guide book says the season is August-October though : /

4. Agrocybe pediades? Dozens of these scattered in mulch.

5. Entoloma strictus?

6. Limacella sp? Not too sure, but that bug seems to enjoy it nonetheless.

I was feeling a bit frustrated after today, but making this post and trying to ID my finds cheered me up a lot. Any corrections/confirmations to my ID's are appreciated.

You need to get pictures of the key parts from different angles. I thought 2 might be a Pluteus but without seeing the gills it's not easy to tell.

When I'm hunting I have a bad habit of wanting to find what I'm looking for and underdocumenting others. I need to be more disciplined.

There's a question I forgot to ask. The past few days I've been finding huge dumps of wood debris that look like this, more concentrated even.

Do ovoids grow directly from stick piles like this, or do they grow more often from buried wood?

1 is panus conchatus
2 bolbitius
3 not sure, it's not a, Phaeomarasmius, descending gills, no stalk or cap scales , looks like a gym.
4 Agrocybe, but probably not pediades the veil is too persistent for pediades
5 not strictus too robust, need to see the gills to make an ID
6 Probably psathyrella

Sometimes you'll see them on piles, mostly on buried wood.
