Was 3 growing from wood? or soil around the base of the tree? It looks like a Cortinarius sp.

No. 3 was growing directly from the tree, I am pretty sure it was a Cortinarius.

Hehe didn't realise Cortinarius don't grow from wood.  I relooked over the shots and rattled my brain around and I think you are right it was from the dirt at the base of the tree.  It's a bit confusing because it pokes through the bark.

Feel like such a doofus everytime I make a mistake like that.  :facepalm3:

it looks like 3 is coming from the wood. Orange sporeprint/blue greening makes me think gymnopilus of the sctive variety. Got any more pics of it?

Only one other shot on the pc, I'll have a look through the camera and see whats there that I didn't use.

I really need to pay more attention when I am hunting I keep missing crucial details.  I suppose the more I hunt/try to ID my finds the better I'll get at it.

I am fairly confident it is a Cortinarius, not Gymnopilus.  MO consensus seems to be Cortinarius rotundisporus I have not seen one of those with such green colouring on the cap before though.

I'm not convinced they are C. rotundisporus but they could be. I agree that the colours don't seem right for that species.

Yeah it just seems a lot different colour wise to any I have seen before.
