Cacti roots. Dry / wet soil.
    #14494325 - 05/22/11 02:26 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Aight. So ive had a cacti family for a couple of years now. Pedros and Jessi's.

Right now I have 4 pups around 7 inches a piece (above soil) that I got rooting a few months ago.

Question: From my understanding, cacti puts out roots when It is searching for moisture. So If you are waiting for a cutting to root, it's best to keep the soil dry to allow the cactus to "search" for water.

In some other thread someone claimed something along the lines of "Wait until the cactus has an established root system before watering."

What exactly would you consider established ? My cuttings have probably around 5 roots a piece under the soil that are approx. 3/4-1" in length.

With only a 5 or so inch long roots per cutting, should I still lay off the watering ?

Oh and while I remember I have one more question.
- On my bridgesii that is about 2 feet tall, 8 or so inches up from the soil line the cactus is starting to put a few roots right out of the side of the cactus. I'm not sketchin on it, I'll let it do it's thing. Just curious why this happens and what the potential of it is.

Thanks ! man I love the ethno garden. By far the best subforum and place to read around. The nicest peeps be hangin out in here  :billymaythumbup:

I water before the roots form. I'm not anal about their care. I place cutting in the ground in the spring and let them do their thing. If you are paranoid about rot, just let the pots dry out completely before watering again.

It might be putting out side roots cause it needs more water, but sometimes they just put out roots for no apparent reason. Nothing to worry about at all.

That's fine for outdoors, but what about in pots?  Do you think that watering before roots are established will lead to rot in potted cuttings?

Also, I've read a few people here say that they leave their cuttings wrapped in newspaper until roots come and then place the cutting in soil.  So can I just leave the ens of the cuttings wrapped in newspaper for a few weeks and check for roots before potting?

One more question - I just received a few cuttings and the hardened cut surface has some kind of sulfurous powder applied to it.  I assume this is to help prevent rot, but will this powder retard root growth?  Should I attempt to remove the powder via brushing/damp cloth/etc?

Sorry for the n00b questions.  I've been reading a lot here and other places, but there seems to be a certain amount of technique and various ways of doing things that have me just a little bit confused.

Let it dry in between waterings.

OK, but what about the sulfur powder?

And waiting for roots before planting, or just go ahead and plant them and wait 2-3 weeks before watering?

Or should I just plant and water, let dry and continue right away without worrying about roots first?

BTW, I'm going to do one log and one stand-up planting.

Screened commercial cactus soil and perlite 50:50 and then a bit of sand, red lava rock.  Well drained, but in my area it is quite humid and raining almost everyday, so I'm worried that the soil will not dry out well enough to prevent rot if I water rootless cuttings.

I would really like to plant these tomorrow, so if I don't see any responses I'm just going to clean off the sulfurous powder as much as possible and put the cuttings in dry soil for 2-3 weeks.

Doc_T - do you have any cacti that you have experience with?

Where are you that they use sulfur? Red sulfur is not good. I do not know how it affects cacti. I know it is not healthy for people.

Trichocereus do very well in moist environments. If they do not have roots, I would recommend watering once, and then not watering until the soil is dry when you put your finger down into it.

Your mix seems fine. I have mostly clay soil in my pots and the humidity here is 90+% for most of the summer. I have several 7 foot tall beast in 2 to 3 gallon pots with clay soil. They get watered, rain, and urine quite often. I dump raw manure on top of the pots in the spring also. I don't recommended that you do this, I just want to illustrated what my cacti go through.

One more thing, some of my large cacti are from cuttings that were laid on their side, in clay soil, in pots - and the parent piece is still there buried and still whole, 15 years after being laid there, with manure and all that moisture. They really are quite hardy. Just let them dry out once in a while.

If it is that humid where you are, just don't water it and let nature water it.

Sulfur powder that I use is a yellow or lemon colored powder sold in gardening stores as a anti fungal dust it good stuff I treat any cut or damage with it if it starts looking iffy. My dad gave me some in a jar you dont need much and I just use a paint brush to apply it.

Cheers

I don't think there's much danger of fungus in a mix as porous as that.
That commercial cactus soil is a lot of bark and stuff, and if you cut that 50/50 with perlite, it's going to drain beautifully.

So I vote for treating it like any other cactus. Let it get good and dry, really dry, then water until the soil is saturated. Repeat as needed.
