My new automated greenhouse!
    #14365842 - 04/28/11 09:01 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

It's a 4 level greenhouse from lowes. It was about 50 dollars.

There are a total of six square holes cut on the sides, each is about 3x3 inches.

From petco I have a reptifogger and a hygrotherm humidistat/thermostat combo.

The hose from the fogger goes in through a small hole near the top and pours out fog horizontally.

Everything together runs about $220 dollars I think.

Oh and of course there's a 6500k florescent light in a work lamp hanging next to the chamber on a timer for 12 hours a day.

I have an old humidifier, I took the fan part of it and put it on the bottom rack, it is connected in conjunction with the humidifier so that when the controller goes on so does the fan. This results in mist being blow around the entire chamber for about one or two minutes every 20 minutes or so.

The greenhouse stays between 92-95% RH. All I do is refill the tank on the fogger once a day with distilled water.

Minor pinning started on some of them in two days. While the RH stays between 92-95% there are no water droplets sitting on the cakes because they are basically being given a mini mist/fan every 20-40 minutes.

There's the fogger and the little green light thing is the controller for the hygrotherm. It has a plug in for a humidifier and a heater. I have nothing plugged in the heater because the temps are about 65-80 here right now, but in the winter I may put a small warmmist in there and set it up. You can also set the controller for a "nighttime" mode, where you have a day time temp and a night time temp. It has a light sensor to differentiate.

Any ideas on how I can improve this setup? It's my only fruiting chamber and at the moment it's hard for me to get it full all at once, my one idea is to get allergen filters for home ventilation systems and attach pieces of that to the air holes. Also, the bottom of the greenhouse comes open, so I have taped plastic around the bottom to keep the humidity up, it drops quickly as it is (hence the constant sensor activation).

The thing I wonder is, is this constant mist/fan too much? Will mycelium be happier if it were just a little more stagnant? They don't seem to be showing any signs of drying out, no yellowing or bluing at all, but they've only been in there for four days.

I just stumbled across this thread.  How did this grow turn out for you?  I'm considering purchasing one of these hygrotherm setups and I want to get some reviews before I do.

I've heard multiple ppl who used to use mini greenhouses like this switching over to monotubs

I'd go monotub, a lot less money and less maintenance

Just my 2 cents

I do use monotubs.  I'm currently working with a strain that doesn't perform well in monotubs.

I like the setup & just checked prices. $185, but petco has the 2 on special for less so prob $150.

I am curious as to what kind of temp comes out of the fogger?

So far I have seen results I expected out of a shotgun. I saw the same frequency of cakes that didn't pin as I've always seen. But they pinned the second flush. I saw some awesome pin sets though that I've never seen before, but the mushrooms didn't seem to get quite as large. Could just be genetics due to multispore.

Less maintenance? I do NOTHING. I fill a water bottle every day or two depending on the ambient humidity. It's a first run with the thing.

From now on I will be putting foil under the cakes, and I will be putting something under any blocks. I didn't think that having mushrooms grow upside down would be so annoying when it came time to harvest, but it was!

You should try bulk with that setup.

I am going to be doing a number of things in it. I did cakes with it just as a test run and I had a lot of them going. My main drive for doing more bulk stuff is mainly because when I set this thing up and put 34 cakes in it I realized that it was a quarter full and I said to myself

"How the fuck am I going to fill this thing?"
Aha! Bulk substrates. Got me some bags, planning on doing lots of trays and blocks. Hopefully with horse poop.

Use wax-paper discs and verm at the bottoms of those cakes. Extra lids or something. With the bottoms exposed like that they will loose a lot more moisture and try to fruit from there as well, usually with poor results. Other than that, you should be golden.

Trays are the way to go with what you have there.
