Grafting stock for Meyer Lemon
    #14493508 - 05/22/11 11:08 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello all, I have a Meyer lemon tree and was wondering what would be a good candidate for it to be grafted to.  Any suggestions?  Can I graft it to an apple trees root system?  Thanks All...

I'm no tree expert, but I don't think you can graft to an apple rootstock, or peach, or pear or anything like that.  I know a common citrus rootstock is Poncirus Trifoliata, and though some literature states the contrary, I believe you can graft lemons to that rootstock.  It is very hardy stuff.  Also, hardier versions of lemons make great rootstocks too, such as lisbon lemon....

As explained by psilocybespawn, you can only graft most plants onto close relatives--the Cactaceae are a notable exception. You need to use a citrus rootstock such as Sour Orange or Poncirus trifoliata which is citrus ally. The appropriate grafting stock will depend on your climate and soil.

Lemons and limes are pretty frequent own root plants though at least in mild climates. Grafting may not needed.

Thank you both for clarifying that for me.  I will probably graft from a Lisbon lemon plant I have going then.

Do either know if it is easy to clone a Meyer or not? or should I just graft onto other citrus stock?

If you're in a warm climate, suitable for citrus, I think you should be fine with Meyer on its own roots.  I think your Lisbon would be a hardier, more disease resistant choice though. Hopefully this helps.  What was your question again?  LOLOL:crazy2:

I just kind of wanted to know if they root easy with a rooting hormone.

No experience with lemon directly, but most citrus are a pain in the ass to root like that. The only one I've ever heard called easy was Thai (aka. Kaffir) Lime. Air layering citrus isn't too hard and is the preferred method for propagating "own roots" plants.

I was talking with a nuseryman/citrus grower today and I learned the answer to this question:

Any "true" lemon or lime can be easily propagated from clones. That is his preferred method and lemons and limes are the only citrus he propagates that way. Meyer Lemon can easily be propagated this way, but grafting to Poncirus if it is a good stock for you climate gives it a bit more protection from cold.
