Ergot in my spawn ???
    #14491328 - 05/21/11 08:35 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I started a spawn jar 3 days ago, I was looking for mycelium and found this.

Here is actual mycelium.

It is soaked and sterilized, so it's dead.

If it wasn't already sterile you could put it on some agar or something.

Yeah, dont eat the sclerotia, it is poisonous.  But save for any chemitry friends that want to synth some LSD for you.

It's probably a seed pod or a dead grain or something. But who knows?

Ergot is a very toxic fungus that could even kill you.
Morning Glory seeds if untreated and fresh, they should not be too terrible for you.

Ergot contains very poisonous alkaloids along with LSD like ones, giving you a trip to hell basically.

I am 100% sure that these 'pods' are the infected kernels of rye made into the sclerotia.  Pics are a dead on match from what I found in my grain last night.

Well you cant eat it that is for sure, but I am going to see if I can connect with someone down the line of friends that knows a chemist that might be interested in acquiring ergot mycellium.  Should be able to rehydrate sclerotia, bust apart, and colonize on some antibiotic agar and isolate...

ingesting ergot will result in a host of negative symtoms
including dry gangrene and convulsions.

I have soaked about 5 grains of ergot sclerotia for 24 hrs, drained water, and placed in a clean empty petri dish with a few drop of water away from kernels.  If nothing happens Ill try soaking longer.

And what do you plan on doing if you get more ergot?
I kinda doubt anyone you know would have the means and equipment for doing something... proper with it. Just sayin'.

There are a lot of ways to synthesis LSA, I would go with Morning Glory seeds if I couldn't get the amine.  It's actually not that hard to get the amine since it's pretty commonly used in pharma.  But, to get it from the fungus, you'd have to get it out of the sclerotia, which contains like 3-4% ergotamine (or something like that, I dunno).  If you are going to hydrolize yourself, go the morning glory seed route.  Otherwise, go with straight amine and hydrolize that instead, plus you save yourself several steps in synthesis.  Not to mention, I don't know about you, but to get enough sclerotia, you'd end up with trillions of ergot spores flying around, and ergot can kill you, so, if you want to hydrolize the ergot sclerotia for LSA, thats on you, I would just buy a giant bag of morning glory seeds, synthesize, and make your amine, hydrolize, and start with LSA that way.  Any 2nd year org. chemist can get ergotamine.

Goal is to cultivate mycellium in LC from piece of sclerotia.  Ergot spores will not hurt even if you fruited sclerotia.  As far as I know the ergotamine and analogues are banned in US.
