cactus okay?

i've been growingthis guy for just about a year, and as you can see the pups growing off the top are doing fine, it's the original cutting that's looking worse for wear. Is this natural? should i consider removing the pups and growing them independently? is that rot i see? any input is greatly appreciated, thanks

The main cacti really doesn't look that great.
If that was mine, I would chop it off about 4 inches from the lowest pup, fan dry for a month, and then repot it and bury it with soil all the way up to the lowest pup.
Wait for some more suggestions first though before you decide what to do, maybe my idea would kill it, I'm not an expert.

Looks like it's rotting to me and it appears that the rot is spreading to the pup. You should cut the pup off and discard the original after figuring out what caused it to rot in the first place.

I would consider fully removing the pups from the momma. She gone die. Good luck.

remove the pups right away and let them dry for a few weeks. Have a funeral for the mom. If the rot spread to the pups then you need to cut them above the rot. Is all that perlite just a top dressing?

Nope, it was greener and less rotted when i got it. The perlite goes all the way down, mixed in with some coco fibers. Perhaps i'll add some sand? It might've been over-watered within the past six weeks; I've watered it twice, which i know is kindof pushing it but i figured it was the first time all year, and spring is supposed to be a good time for cacti. Live and learn. Also, the past week or so here in Jersey has been really humid, misty weather, so not ideal conditions for a cactus. Thanks to everyone, I'll get to repotting, more on this story as it develops..

why 4 inches though? that pup looks like it could do very well on it's own without any of the original cacti there. i would definitely cut the pups off the top and let them root on their own. and then like he said cut the original down a bit.
idk let us know what you end up doing

sorry i didn't read this and the other 4 comments saying the exact same thing. very good advice. that old mom aint going to make it.
but if you are lucky, and you cut the old mom down to almost the roots, maybe an inch or two above, after you remove the pups of course, it might sprout new pups if the roots are in good shape. good luck

Yeah, after reading the other responses I agree it's smarter just to cut the pups completely away. Sorry, it's been awhile since I've done anything with cacti, the only ones I have at the moment are some sort of prickly pear type.

If your cacti was not liek that whenyou got it, your growing techniques have caused this, you need to work out what you are doing wrong or your attempt to save the pups will fail as soon as your pups are exposed to the same growing conditions that are killing the stump

Thanks, and me makes 3 for hating to lose plants.
. . t h e surgery went as well as to be expected; the momma stunk to high heaven from making a tiny incision through her side. So she's in the trash. The kids are alright for now, scabbing over on a piece of newsprint. should i invest in sulfur powder?

The only thing i'm kindof worried about is this little black spot on the big one. It's been there since late last summer when someone dropped it (no names). It just looks like a bruise, and it seems to have grown in fine around it, but could this turn into something worse? Might i need to do more surgery?
Advice, counsel, and sarcastic comments are all welcome.

I would not worry about the black spot especially due to the age of the spotting.
i dont use sulfer i just make sure they are in an area with plenty of moving air and diffuse sunlight, after a few weeks i plant them

Sulfur is good to have around anyway and it's dirt cheap. It's amazing for controlling thrips on cacti tips during Spring when they can do some serious damage especially to Trichocereus. If it's easy to get, you might consider it.
I think you should cut another 1 cm or so off the cutting in the bottom of the photo. Looks like a little bit of residual rot might be present. The black scab is nothing to worry about like those above said.

Thanks all. So i took y'alls advice and chopped off the bottom cm or so and here's the photographic evidence:
 is that cut kosher?
Also, springtime/summer in NJ is tradionally a humid affair, but even by those standards we've been particularly moist this past week or 2. Are there any precautions i should be taking to prevent the cacti from getting soggy as it scabs?

The bottom looks clean.
Sulfur, sun, and air circulation all help, but even in 95%+ humidity here I've never had the bottom of a cutting rot or get soggy.
