Rye Grain Damaged by Wheat Weevils!!! Are my Grains OK to use?
    #14489633 - 05/21/11 01:38 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello there.
I have trouble with little 1-3 milimetres of black insects. They're ruining my rye grain. Today I found 5-10 insects in my container which is filled with 5 kilograms of rye grain.
And there are some black, sphere shaped things in there. I guess they have already made love and they're rising :frown:

Can I use those grain after I get rid of insects and black dots?
Or should I buy some new grain?

Thanks.

Edit: This is the bitch treatening my grains:

It's a weevil.

If you are going to PC, I would use the grain, and if those little bastards wanted to come along, I would PC them too.

If you sterilize the grain, then the mushrooms should not care about a few bugs. I would try to get rid of as many as convenient. They should float during the soak if they are beetles.

I would think that PC'ing them would kill any larva in them.
Knock up a qrt & see if it is ok a few weeks later.
Rye is costly for me so I wouldn't want to throw any out if I didn't have to.

sounds like free protein.

My guess is that after a boil and a pc it shouldnt matter too much unless its a complete infestation. But like said above, try one jar and see how that goes.

:goodluck:

Lol, what you have is called weevils.  I have bought 50lb bags that were crawling with them.  They are there cause the grain was bagged too wet.  They are harmless and if you only have a few then just cook em up, otherwise id return and complain about the grain.

The ones who say, It's OK, GO ON CONTINUE. I have to warn you about something.

This is the second time I'm facing with insects. At my previous experience, the ones who ruined my grain are Ostrinia nubilalis (The European corn borer or the European high-flyer) insects.

And at that time, despite picking all the unwanted parts and tossing them out, my pressure cooked grain jars DIDN'T WORK!
I don't think I did something wrong at sterilization process because it was not my first time.

These insect are certainly not corn borers, it's obvious. I couldn't find any information about them yet, but when I'll continue my research and when I find out what it is, I'll give information.

Those who are interested in the topic, I suggest you to keep tracking the topic because you may be wrong.

Let's wait for for well-experienced growers' responses.

ps: bad news, there are LOTS OF THEM in my grain. :frown:

Anyway there were quite much weevils so i tossed all the grain out.
I'll buy new ones.

Thanks everyone for your response.

Finally I want to remind how to prevent bug increment: always keep your rye grain at the refrigerator.

I was storing them at fridge but then I put them off to get more space. It was my bad putting them out. :frown:

I was trying to say the colonization didn't happen. I sterilized like 10 jars but none of them completed colonization, at the end, all the jars get contaminated.
