Help finding ID for this massive mushroom! *found* Polyporus squamosus
    #14490249 - 05/21/11 03:50 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Habitat:
Found growing on the side of a oak(?) tree, the part where there isn't any bark left. This is in Northern Massachusetts on the border of NH

Gills:
White on the bottom, slightly yellow but almost unnoticeable. No gills, just large pore like structures

Stem:
Short stem with the same texture as the underside of the cap

Cap:
Definite "fur" like pattern, soft texture. Caps range between 4 inches to about a foot and a half long.

Spore print color:
Still working on getting this, left it for 4 hours now and still see nothing. It's very moist, would I have problems getting a print because of this?

Bruising:
No noticeable bruising

Other information:
Woody scent, though most likely not important.

Are these Active? If not, edible?

And here are the pictures:

Polyporus squamosus.

They're common this time of year. Edible, not active. If you want to eat them, limit it to the tender parts.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks much, I'll cut some tender parts and have some nice ingredients for some pasta on fake rapture night.
