Ready to harvest or rotten? Help!
    #14485320 - 05/20/11 04:39 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi,

First I wanna thank Shroomery for its exhaustive information. This is my 1st pftek grow attempt and I have gotten this far without having to post, but now I simply need a case-specific answer...

I have 5 cakes in a poor man's fruiting chamber. 4 of them are pinning, one has no pins. I birthed them about aweek ago, but the temperatures have been in the low 60s (F) so I assumed that's why they didn't grow. It's supposed to be in the 80s this weekend so I was hoping for growth then, but is it too late already, will they not grow at this point? What can I do for the next flush for better results?

These two mushrooms are the only ones that seem to have matured out of the 5 cakes. Is it just me or does the more mature one look kind of mushy, like it's rotten or something? Is this normal? Are either of ready for harvest / recommended to harvest?

Idk if this is the proper way to link stuff but here's some pics (sorry I only have a cameraphone): http://www.shroomery.org/forums/usergallery.php?gallery=250759&folder=grow1

I really appreciate any feedback. Thank you. Peace.

Thanks for the response my friend, you made me a happy happy camper knowing I did this shit right! :laugh:D

Anyone have any opinions on the other cakes though? These 2 shrooms are the only sizeable fruits on all 5 cakes. Should I pick all the pins (Are they in danger of rotting), or should I wait a bit and see if the warm weather doesn't make em grow more?

the pins will keep growing if you supply more water.

try putting your cakes in a dish of water overnight

you can just pick off the larger mushrooms as they appear, just wash your hands or wear gloves. should be good! and congrats on those big buggers!

but if you dunk your cake like k00laid suggested make sure you pull off all the pins. cake dunking is always a good way to 'wake up' the mycelium.

No need to remove pins before dunking. In fact, those pins will survive the dunk and will be the first to fruit after the dunk.

Do you find the Poor Man's Chamber works well for you?

What strain are you growing?

I'm just a little behind you so I will be watching this thread.

Also - Afrosheen...That is the best sig I've ever seen.

The homemade chamber worked OK for me. I used the perlite method to humidify the chamber so it's literally like 0 maintenance, the only time I have to take the cover off is for gas exchange (which is cool cuz I wanna look the fruits of my labor anyway!). This is the Mazatapec strain.

But yeah, I know there are better chambers & methods out there, and since this is my 1st grow I have nothing to compare it to. But I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to this hobby and I needed something that would just GROW on its own, and while the results might not be *optimal* I'm pretty pleased so far

Ok. I think I will harvest the 2 big fruits today but leave all the pins on til Monday juuuust to see if they'll grow, but if not, I'll just pick all the pins and dunk all cakes to see if the next flush is better. Sound good?

Sounds good! though afrosheen is correct in saying that you can dunk w/ pins on. but ime if you have pins that are aborted and turning bad, dunking them in water will only greater exacerbate their decomposition. definitely not something you need to worry over if you just keep an eye on them.

Right, before the dunk you want to pick off aborts but leave pins. They're pretty easy to tell apart. Aborts look dead, pins look alive.
