mary jane updated, flowering?
    #14489678 - 05/21/11 01:52 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

These little buddies popped up about a month and a half or so ago in the yard right after a good ice storm, they seem to be healthy and I want to move em to a more discreet location. they'll still be outdoors. There's plenty of online info out there, but I was hoping for some hands on exp tips. especially in not destroying the roots and just general mistakes commonly made.

pics are side and above views of "A" and "B" respectively.

They do look healthy, so you really shouldn't have any problems with transplanting.  Definitely dig up a wide radius around the plant.  Put them in a place where they wont get totally cooked in the summer heat but will get good light.  Good luck!

you might want to gently shake out the dirt from the roots too before you re-plant.

They like the attention and improved root aeration.

1. Get a shovel and a garden hose with working line (preferably well water, but I think tap water wouldn't kill)

2. Proceed to dig , as Ethnohorter suggested, a wide radius of about 1 1/2 ft. around the plant and make sure to dig deep    to try and get the tap root up without damaging/ripping it.

If you are not planting in a pot, skip this step and go to 4

3. If you want to plant in a pot, you may wash the roots off gently by using your thumb to make the hose into a pressured mist and you may efface the dirt off using your fingers by gently handling the roots and breaking up clumps of dirt attached to the roots.

4. If' you're planting it outside, gently place it on its side in a wheelbarrow and prep it for the new spot by placing it in a tupperware container (or just bring a tupperware/storage container out there and do it directly; the whellbarrows to make it easier to get in there/move it greater distances).

It really depends on the type of environment its heading to that's the most important.

They were moved into large plastic pots just ealier an hour or so before the sun went down, as described above, no problems at all.

They are goin to a small clearing about 20ft from a pond, the soil is good, i didn't ph test it, but plenty of milk weed and grass grows in the area. it's all the soil that got dug from around the sides of the pond to build it up last fall.

I pant on mixing a little hummus/manure in with the top soil, would that help or hinder? I want to keep it as organic as feasible and see what happens.

if the maure is fresh, no. If it's dried, you could get away with it. It would be better to start a compost pile and then use the dirt generated form that, but what ever works!

I would be more inclined to add some perlite or something to help lighten up the soil.  Nitrogen shouldn't be a problem, and over-fertilizing too is easy.  You can always feed it after you plant it, too much compost will kill them.

a cutting would have been a good idea, but these guys needed to move outta nosy neighbor eye sight.

they found their way on the backside of this pond, about an hour before dawn this morning.

they're in good potting soil mixed with pebble gravel, the pictures are about ten feet away, ran into a few speckled king snakes which is a good thing, so I was keeping a small distance not to bother them.

that soil looks like hard mud, but it's fairly soft and full of worms and rolly polly's.

did you test the soil to see how well it drains because that looks like it has a bit of clay in it which is not good for your lady. Also how much space is cleared around her it doesn't look like much and she is going to take up a quite of bit of space so you might want to clear out some more space

You might be surprised how much she can use clay with the right nutrients. It is stifling to the roots, cause the love their aeration, but I think she'll survive; it doesn't look like it's straight up chert/ultisol, there's some loam in there by my eye.

damn yeah there's probably a lot off clay, it was from the bottom of the pond a few years back. they've grown 2-3"s since getting there. I used a drop of superthrive for five gallons of water, which has only been used maybe 1/2 gallon so far on one feed (i plan on doing that if needed or twice a month), other than that 1/2 gal of water a day. they're def standing tall today. more pics this weekend. How would I go about putting better soil in? can you mix it into the top soil or would I need to take the plants up? I'd rather not do that.

also the soil does dry a little each day, it's kinda damp right under the soil when its time for more each day.

I would dig them back up, break up some of the dirt around the roots, dig your hole a little deeper and wider and put some soil in it, then put your plant back in and put soil around and on top of the root ball. Lightly pack it down and water.

Here's a little update on these guys, busy lately so there's been no soil improvement, but they seem to be doing really well.

They seem to be doing fine without support, plus it will just force the stalk to harden quicker. They could need it eventually at some point though.
