Oyster grow help!!!

Hello All-
I am embarking on my first oyster grow. Just received 6 lbs of spawn today.
What is the most efficient and effective way to utilize my spawn?
Should I put it directly into straw logs, or should I make more spawn with rye grain?
I don't have a pc, but I've had success in the past just boiling my rye seed in the jars. I am thinking this is what I should do, so I can be in a perpetual growth state.
Any and all advice and recommendations are very much appreciated!

Do both. 6 pounds is a lot. Oysters grow pretty fast so boiling the grain might work. That way you will have future spawn and a bulk grow.
Good Luck

Straw is probably the best substrate for oysters. It's available almost everywhere, and pretty cheap. As far as expanding grain goes you need to properly sterilize grain spawn. It's going to be expanded into bulk substrates so, any contamination in there will also unfold. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Here is a link to where someone ferments grain without sterilization to grow oysters. You might want to try this.

simple grain - I soak for 6+ hours, drain for 15 min, then load jars and PC. If you soak more than 24 hours, you can put in in the fridge for a week, but changing the water after 24 hours is a good idea. I use large plastic jugs with lids. That way one soak is good for a weeks worth of PCing (I can only do 3 pints at a time).
Never had a problem.

If your spawn is in bag form you will not be able to spread out into new jars/bags, it is too cumbersome and you have no laminar flowhood. You will want to spawn it to pasteurized straw log or make an outdoor woodchip bed.
The only grain prep tek that makes the rights results is RR's rye grain tek (works for other grains too). There are a lot of bad teks out here on grain prep like the one Akbar just mentioned that will give you dry and unevenly hydrated grains with moisture on the outside. A good tek makes the grain evenly max hydrated and the outside of the grains end up drier.

I agree, I'm going to spawn it directly to straw logs. Can I use a chunk of my log to spawn rye grain jars after the grow?

I'm trying to follow RR's straw log tek verbatim. What conditions should I put my straw log in to let it colonize?

You shouldn't use pasteurized material to inoculate sterile material. Colonize your straw logs in a clean area with good ventilation.

No, you can only do grain inoculations with fresh mycellium or spores. Mycellium has an age like you and me. As it gets older from the point of germination from spore it becomes weaker and weaker till it reaches whats called 'senescence' where it is useless. You always want to stick to the youngest mycellium possible.

Put the log on a wire shelf so that air can breath all around it. Make sure there is a row of holes on bottom so any excess water can drip out. Temp should be 70-75f, RH doesnt matter. Use fluorescent lighting on 12/12 schedule or indirect sunlight.

what's the difference between this and fruiting? RH? Can i let my logs colonize in the FC without the humidifiers on then switch em on when ready?

Colonising can happen anywhere. Under the stairs, in a cupboard, wherever. Colonisation wants low light, high humidity and high CO2. All of this happens when you seal it up in a bag.
You could put it in your FC but that's a waste, you are better to colonise elsewhere. But get a rhythm happening. Colonise 1 bag this week, 1 the next and so on, then after 3-4 weeks one goes into the chamber to fruit while 3-4 more colonise. It's a production line.

You can colonize logs anywhere in your house at room temp. Just dont put it anywhere that is sealed up, the log must breathe some fresh air or it will rot. When you see mushrooms pinning out of holes move it into FC with RH 80%+ then mist mushrooms and logs 2-3x a day. That way you save space in FC for only fruiting logs.
