Huichols march against Canadian mining company
May 20, 2011 - guadalajarareporter.com

Members of indigenous communities from the isolated highlands of northern Jalisco marched Friday in Guadalajara in protest at the Mexican government's decision to allow a Canadian mining company to explore and develop mineral deposits  in a part of San Luis Potosi State they say is a sacred area for their people.

The 6,327-hectare property lies in the Real de Catorce region, 25 kilometers west of Matehuala, and was purchased by Vancouver-based First Majestic Silver Corporation in November 2009.  Almost 70 percent of the land falls inside a sacred area for the Wixárika (the traditional name for the Huichols), who make an annual pilgrimage there to carry out religious observances and gather peyote, the hallucinogenic cactus.

As well as Huichols, Friday morning's march included students and members of NGOs that are calling for the federal government to revoke the mining concession.

Local reporters commented that they couldn't recall a previous occasion when so many members of an indigenous tribe had taken part in a demonstration in Guadalajara.

Similar protests took place simultaneously outside the United Nations headquarters in New York and in Vancouver, Canada, organizers said.

According to march spokesman Antonio García Mijares, UNESCO considers the disputed land among the world's 14 most important sacred sites.

First Majestic said in a recent press release that Real de Cartorce will become “an important mine for the region and help the community create new jobs and increase the economic opportunities in the area.” First Majestic owns three other producing silver mines in Mexico.

This really sucks for the Huichol.

I went to this land back in 2000, and I can tell by looking at images of google earth that agriculture and mining are starting to be commonplace in that part of the desert.

Its not just about peyote here either...  There is plenty of peyote in Mexico to feed the Huichol for generations.  This land, once altered by modern mining operations, simply will never be the same.

If anybody is interested in visiting Real De Catorce, round trip bus fare can be had from Austin for under $150.  Go visit it before it is forever lost.

Damn right this isn't just about the peyote. It's about Wirikuta, the sacred land of their ancestors and protective deities. If they lose that land and it is destroyed they believe their entire world crumble. I will be personally going down there in June to participate in further demonstrations to stop these concessions. It is disgusting that these miners really don't give a shit. I bet if i went and poured mercury all over their home they would be pissed of.

Similarly, a huge open-pit iron mine is in the works in far northern Wisconsin.  The initial dig would be four miles long by one and a half miles wide.......and one thousand feet deep!  This is in an area that is headwaters for several rivers.  The hills....actually very old mountains......would be simply removed.  This mine is proposed in Iron and Ashland Counties.  Thusfar, the only opposition I've heard about comes from the Bad River Indian Reservation, which is right in the affected area.  The Indians were granted hunting, fishing, and gathering rights for perpetuity when they were placed on this reservation.  They are arguing that the mine would destroy these rights.

I've been to this area and it is a marvelous place.  Of course, there are rules in place for "restoring" the land following the extraction of ore.  But this "restoration" is a joke.  Where once you had mountains, heavy forest cover, rivers and waterfalls, there will now be a big flat area covered with grass.

We need peeps to get involved with this situation.  Google 'Iron mine proposed in N. Wisconsin' or something similar to get the facts.

Most troubling aspect is that under our new POS governor Scott Walker, industries are being given free reign to do as they please.  All DNR regulations are being rapidly weakened to allow for this mine to proceed.  The mining companies then in turn fling mad cash at Walker and his Repooplican cronies to further their various Fascist causes.

You may think I exaggerate.  You ought to live here and see what they're doing to this place.

Thing is that the Canadian company wants to extract Gold from that area and is planning on Using a Cyanide-Based gold extraction. The Canada company plans are to "inject" the mine with industrial quantities of this material.

Local news are being censored nobody seems to know a thing while many tons (literally) of cyanide arrive at the zone ready to be used...

Yeah, gold extraction is even worse than other metallic mining.  There was another mine proposed twenty or so years ago in N.Wisconsin........this one for copper/gold/zinc.  Right at the headwaters of the Wolf River-a national scenic river.  That plan would have had lots of cyanide being shipped up there, to be used in this most sensitive of areas.  Luckily, those plans were eventually defeated.

The problem here now is that the political climate has shifted so much.  They're gonna get away with pretty much whatever they want to do.  Gogebic Taconite is the name of the company planning this.  It is, of course, owned by another company which is, in turn, owned by another company........etc.  Plus, with that area's chronically depressed economy, it's all 'jobs jobs jobs'.

Oh Scott Walker, I heard about him on NPR today.  He won the election on the promise that he is going to create 250,000 jobs in Wisconsin.

Now I see how he is going to do it.  Very clever.

Thanks Al.  And all kidding aside, it is true that a major part of his job-creating agenda involves across-the-board weakening of environmental rules.  This isn't a secret.  He's quite proud of it, as are his followers.  Wetlands protection, stewardship of unique areas, alternative energy.......these things are not on Scooter's mind.

Sorry for the threadjack.  But my opinion is that we need to be just as concerned with what is happening in our own land as we are (rightfully) concerned about bad stuff happening in far-away lands.
