Salina Police Chief Jim Hill said he is elated that Gov. Sam Brownback signed a bill Wednesday that adds chemicals used in designer drugs called bath salts and herbal potpourri to the list of controlled substances in the state.
The bill will become law immediately upon publication in the Kansas Register, which could happen as soon as Thursday, he said.
"This is a significant step in improving public safety in our state, and I applaud our local legislators, the entire Legislature and the governor for signing it," Hill said. "This is broad and sweeping legislation, and it will make our city and our state much safer."
Hill said Salina police will be strictly enforcing the ban on synthetic cannabinoids used in herbal potpourri and chemicals used in bath salts, which have a similar structure to chemicals in methamphetamine.
"Anyone who has gone underground and is selling this poison can expect a visit from us," Hill said. "We're going to send purveyors of this poison to prison."
Hill said a national ban is needed, and Congress has heard testimony within the last 45 days about making the ban on the "dangerous drugs that have really no medical use" a federal law.
Tom Stanton, deputy Reno County district attorney, said use of bath salts and herbal potpourri had exploded in Reno County over the past couple of months as people realized police couldn't keep them from using it because it wasn't illegal.
However, he said using the drugs was a violation of drug court policy, which is designed to keep people from getting high by any means.
Stanton, a former assistant Saline County attorney, said the more sweeping approach to the legislation, which bans whole classes of chemicals, will prevent people from making slight adjustments to the formula and putting out a new drug.
"It's a different way of doing things, and it's going to enable us to keep a handle on things for at least a short time," he said.
He said people are after the mood-altering effects of the drugs, regardless of the dangers they pose.
"We've got to get a handle on it because the consequences are disastrous," he said. "The effects on the human body can be extreme."

I'm pretty sure Kansas and Oklahoma are both equally fucked. We're practically family, brother.

If he's talking about Mephedrone or MPDV they both have similarities (meph much more so.) At the same time though, there are a lot of chemicals that are more similar to the methamphetamine chemical than MPDV.

Chock another up for kansas, we're always quick to hop on board and ban shit. Love how they use broad language to tell you how bad it is almost like drugs are a friggen nuke.

How can you say a drug has no medical use if hasn't yet been invented or tested? I'm disgusted by analog laws.
I can't find anything saying what exactly they are banning here, I would like to know, but god damn it don't give us propaganda lumping all drugs together by using worthless rhetoric like "have a similar structure to chemicals in methamphetamine"
