Inoculated Spawn Bags, worried I screwed up
    #14486968 - 05/20/11 10:03 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I inoculated my spawn bags and tried to keep things as sterile as possible.  I wasn't sure if I was supposed to inflate the bags through filter patch (by pulling the sides apart) right away.  Can anybody tell me if I messed up all my bags by inflating them too soon?

I have never used spawn bags just jars but inflating them sounds kinda weird in general you should get plenty of ge thru the filter batch as is I would think they are supposed to be maintence free till they are fully colonized just my 2 cents.

It is my first time using spawn bags also. I received 6 bags from Outgrow. Well, I didn't do enough research and got cocky. I pulled the bag apart and injected 6cc's into each bag.

I lost 4 of them. They developed a sickly sweet, weird smell which I think was wet spot from what I've read. They did not germinate either. One of the survivors was Pan Cyan which is almost 100% colonized on day 9.

Pulling some air into the bag isn't gonna hurt.

It has a filter so it should be alright. I myself don't spread them apart until I break them up at about 20 -30%, & thats only to get all of the rye back to the bottom

why not go to wall mart and get some jars and make your own, bags sound like a pain in the ass jars are super easy and way cheaper.

You should be ok.  Do you know what size filter patch the spawn bag has?

I'dda begun pulling air through the filter patch until there was a full plenum of air (which takes days) before I ever inoculated them.

Not exactly, a plenum of air needs to be provided to support the growth of all that mycelium in one area.

Best thing to do if you seal bags pre-sterilization, is to inflate the bags with said plenum of air and then sterilize.  The air introduced into the spawn bag prior to sterilization will become sterilized during the sterilization cycle.  If you have a flowhood, a sterile plenum of air can be provided to the spawn bags at inoculation time.

That's a good way to get some exploded bags. The best way to cook bags is to roll the air OUT of them prior to sealing them and pressure cooking.

You got me on this one.  That makes sense seeing as how those bags, once sealed, inflate like balloons during the sterilization cycle.

Looking back on it, when I used to pre-seal bags before sterilization, I'd remove all the air from the bags prior to sealing them then sterilize them.  Once the bags were removed from the PC, to inflate them, I'd begin to shake apart the grains until they were loose and a plenum of air would begin.  I'd repeat the shake process, pulling the bag's apposing sides away from each other, avoiding any contact from the grain and filter patch until a full plenum of air existed inside of the spawn bag before I inoculated with LC.  It took 5 days until I was satisfied with the size air plenum introduced into the bags before I would inoculate.

Now I have a flowhood and all bags are, inflated with sterile air from the flowhood, inoculated with fully colonized grain spawn in front of the flowhood, then sealed, post-inoculation.  Doing bags this way, coupled by a shake at 30-40% colonization, has large grain bags colonized within 10 days, topps.

Seems like its kinda a pain in the ass compared to jars just me tho I am a noob with limited grows under my belt however I have never had a contam and I am up to about 30 quarts fully colinzed....

It was the price I had to pay to succeed in my unique grow situation and climate dealt to me at the time.  Now I knock up bags in front of a flowhood with fully colonized grain spawn.  I get 5-6 quarts of grain per bag, colonized in 10 days, coupled with one shake somewhere between 40-70% colonization.
