The leaves are similar to lilac, Bob. Are they related?

The leaf shape is similar, but otherwise they're quite different. The knotweed creates dense canopies that are super dark underneath. Haven't found much under them around here though.:sad: Just a little north for ovoids so far...

That caught me off gaurd when I first read it.

Anyway, those fruits/seeds are called samaras. Generally ashes and maples release them.



Sycamore and maples both belong to the Family Aceraceae, the maple family.
If you look at the Leaves of the two it is clear they are closely related. For the purposes of a Saprophytic fungus there's not much difference between them, both are nice tasty hardwoods.

There is a difference in transatlantic nomenclature though, grateful. We have a tree here that you boys call a maple, that we call a sycamore.
