Martha with 24hr continuous coolmist
    #14484825 - 05/20/11 02:53 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Is there anything bad about running a coolmist 24/7 in a martha as long as there is lots of vent holes and no dripping condensation?  I know it should be like 2min on 8 min off, but I dont have a timer with that many ticks or a digi one.

I am doing cased grain blocks in it.

the coolmist is going to burn out pretty quickly.

As long as you don't get too much FAE in the GH, it should be fine.

Look into purchasing a Precision cycle timer. They're about $70 & are worth every penny.

I'd recommend spawning to bulk instead of just cased grain, as your yields will be much higher.

Id echo that. But I wouldnt pay 70 for a timer..Intermic has 15 minute interval timers for like 7 bucks, works fine for me.

I've got a 15min interval timer, I was just thinking about smaller intervals.

After some testing it looks like humidity reaches 95-100% in about 30min, so im going to try 30on 15off.

I've got a cool mist that I bought from Walgreens for $20.  I used it in my martha last year, and I ran it 24/7 for about 6 months straight with no problem.  I had to cut some slits in the tent to allow some extra FAE because before I cut them it was pretty much raining inside the tent.

I busted my martha out about 3 weeks ago, and the cool mist is still running strong.

Yeah I agree with Billy Mays, if you clean regularly and dont run tubing from coolmist it will last a long time.  Most people burn them out by tubing them which causes back pressure on the motor.

It seems I can do 30 on 15 off, but if im running AC with no humidifier in room I have to run it 24/7.  I have 6 2"holes cut instead of slits cause im using cheapo plastic that tears if slit.

I have ran my coolmist tubed 24/7 for up to 3 months with no probs. I have two 3/8" reinforced (no kink) rubber hoses running into a greenhouse that sits atop an under-bed style bin to collect the water. I run an ultrasonic for a few min a day to keep the rH 90%+.

OP u have an impeller type coolmist right? Cuz the filter type ones don't maintain high enuff RH. U prolly kno that tho..

I tried a walgreens impeller coolmist and a vicks. the small 30ish dollar units. ran em 24/7.  found that the rh drops off very quickly as soon as they start running out of water. I gave up on the GH approach all together, but if I hadn't I would have def rigged up a reservoir system for that shit. cuz it's easy to forget to fill it and those little fuckers don't hold enuff water imo. 2 cents.

btw...tubs ftw!

I had the same issue.  Humidity would drop really quickly when the water level dropped a little below the fill line.  I ended up building a reservoir then piping the cool mist into the tent.  With the reservoir I could go about 3 days between fillings.

And I agree, tubs are the way to go.  I only broke out the martha because I'm trying my hand at pans.

Make sure the center of the wick isnt clogged with lime.  Water is pulled up the outside and inside of the wick.  I cleaned mine today and it was totally packed with it and I wondered why I had to keep it really full to work.  Now it runs very well as it should.

Um, throw that away. You don't want a wick style humidifier. You want an impeller type coolmist.

I splurged for my first GH and bought the Hygrotherm from Zoomed. It is for controlling humidity and temp devices in animal habitats. It will be interesting to see this thing in action. Eventually I will do a log and report my results. It cost $67 online. It will control my vicks v400 inside on the bottom.

Sorry, by wick i meant impeller (it is a wick of sorts).  The center tube of the impeller gets clogged with lime.

Oh ok, u mean the draw tube. Mine went a long long time before getting limed up. You must have hard water.

Yes very hard.

It is looking like 30on 15off is definitly flooding the lower shelf with the coolmist and the casings arent drying hardly at all. So now trying 30 on 30 off, or maybe just 15on 15off.

i pretty much agree with everyone else. i have a very similiar set up and itll work fine long as you have some ventilation, or even if youre just the impatient type and you open it up several times a day to look for progress. this process has actually worked quite well for me, the only down side being exactly what everyone else said, they need to be refilled constantly.
