What religion were you brought up in growing up? What are you now?
    #14484614 - 05/20/11 02:04 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Curious what you guys were raised believing in/exposed to by your family and what your current beliefs (or lack thereof) are now?

I used to go to a Spiritist church when I was a wee lad but all I did there was stay in some random room and played with Legos (and also stole some, blasphemin' heretic since diapers son :snoop:), then just adopted a very hardcore Atheistic stance throughout my teenage years, went through a period of LaVeyan Satanism while still grounded in Atheism and am now deeply, deeply spiritual.

How 'bout you guys?

Remember, let's be respectful here.

My whole family was/is very religious (Protestant)
But they never once pushed it onto me. I never once attended
church. And I thank them for that. Because religion is complete
fucking bullshit.

I was raised atheist, my dad turned to Asatru, and I'm finding myself unduly tempted by one or another ultra-liberal sect of Christianity.

If anything I want to start my own church, use sophisticated Biblical interpretation to justify anything I want, eschew the idea of hell, and generally do all this with the belly-fire of a preacher. I could definitely pull it off. Oh, and a giant print of the Cosmic Christ would be behind the altar.

Instead of a tithe, I would have people bring in plants, and as the faith of our congregation grows so too will the house of God.

(I heard preachers get paid by the government :shoosh:)

I'd definitely join, especially with that badass pic behind the altar :awecid:

Well, I think marijuana would be a bit too conspicuous, but people can bring in any plants they want. Certain plants are especially holy, though.

I was raised on a variety of different religions all of which were forced down my throat by my mother as she tried to find her own way. First it was Judaism, then Mormonism, then Scientology, then a little Christian Science, and finally some Buddhism.

All bullshit.

Believe in nothing. Think something things are unknowable. Love the idea of Asatru.

Raised catholic.  I wasnt forced into it or anything though. My grandfather is really into it. He goes every sunday but he doesnt partake in things confession,so he has always had a defiant stance on the whole dogma thing. If he doesnt agree with part of the religion, he doesnt do it.

My parents were divorced when I was 7 yrs old.  Before that time my sister and mother would go to church but my father and I would stay home and shoot bb-guns.

After they divorced I didnt hear much about religion until i decided to get back into church at the age of 11-12,with pressure from my mother.

Around the age of 14-15 I became, what I considered at the time, "atheist".  Around the age 16-17 I found mushrooms.

Now I am just a child of the universe. Another integer in the equation that is life/love/god.

Well I guess my mom was raised with more of a christian background.
By the time I was say 6 I remember my parents sitting around with a creative dynamics "metaphysical" study group.

So while I was not raised with any religion pushed on my I was exposed to a more metaphysical idea of religion, spirituality.

I don't really care for the term metaphysical, so I guess you could say i was just brought up to be spiritual.

So even now I don't say I have a religion. I have various spiritual beliefs that fit me. I am still not sure if the Anunnaki created the human race as slaves or if I am a cell in a much bigger creature and doing my best to not turn in to cancer.
Hopefully I will find out one day.

I wasn't raised as anything. My dad was a buddhist but he never indoctrinated me with it.

I came to my own conclusions as I became of age.

It's not really like I was "indoctrinated" in atheism, but when naturally asking how the universe came to exist, my parents gave me the "some people think some guy named God did it" line. It sounded pretty stupid to me. :smirk:

It makes sense to say nothing. there really is no atheist anymore then there are non-racists. just normal people being normal its just that there are less normal people then brainwashed.

Im curious as to what being 'deeply, deeply spiritual' means as opposed to just 'spiritual'.  Does that mean you have stronger faith, or a more fundamentalist belief?

I was raised Christian. My parents made me go to church every Sunday up until I graduated High School. I abandoned Christianity sometime around 8th-9th grade, but still prayed out habit I guess until around senior year.

Nowadays I don't hold any religious views really. I believe in the Universe and its laws and power.

That said, I'm glad I went to church all those years. Youth group wound up being like a third family (my neighbors were my second), we were all really tight and had a blast on retreats. Jesus camp was also my first time smoking weed.  :potleaf:

My mom was/is christian, my dad is atheist....I was raised around my moms side of the family more than anything and they're all christian and I went to church every Sunday with them when I was younger.

I recall back to when I was as young as 4 years old and thinking religion didn't make sense  . I had tons of questions that would always be answered in a religious/christian point of view and I was like :ifyoucanawe: ....Though I didn't have this exact concept when I was younger, I more or less was amazed at how brainwashed everyone was and how fake people seemed to act in church....

Church always creeped me out....Last time I set foot in a Church was about 7 years ago, and I still get weirded out. Don't plan on being in one ever again in my life.

Now, I don't really label my self to a certain set of beliefs/views.

Church has never creeped me out but it sure bored the hell out of me. I can only remember one time maybe back when I was in 5th grade('86?) my grandma wanted to go to some Easter service, so I was dragged along with my mom. The only other time I remember being in a church was for some weddings, which wasn't bad except the one cousin that had a Catholic wedding. Never, ever, in any circumstance go to a Catholic wedding. I swear it felt like 2 hours, maybe a bit less but those seats(pews?) suck ass on the ass. I would fake my own death before doing another one of those.

My parents believe in God, Heaven and things of that nature but they never instilled beliefs on us as children. They let us go our own way in regards to religion, I guess in a way letting us figure it out for ourselves. Never went to church, never did sunday school, none of that junk. I can proudly say 20 years later that I have figured out nothing and am quite alright with it :snowman:

You know, looking back, the closest I ever got to religious education was sitting around with my Dad debating the mysteries of life, death, god, evil, etc. I guess I am pretty privileged to have parents who never forced religious beliefs on me.

Everyone on the Irish side of my family is Catholic. Those weddings suck ass.

Aw sheit. Do you know that the Bible essentially tells you you can do whatever the fuck you want, and as long as you maintain a concern for your fellow man you are guaranteed to go to heaven?

A lot of people don't know that.

I wasn't raised a particular religion. I don't know my dad's views. My mom doesn't subscribe to a particular religion but believes there is a higher power.

I wouldn't call my self anything. maybe agnostic. I don't know if there is or isn't a god and the answer to that doesn't concern me what-so-ever.

I'm honestly too drunk and lazy to get up and find specific passages in the Bible, but the fact of the matter is that the entire New Testament is about how you can do whatever you want and still get into heaven as long as you stay conscious. Jesus Christ died for our sins. Many preachers take this to mean that sin no longer exists, and I'm tempted to agree. Read Corinthians or Galatians, you'll see what I mean. I might come back later to give some specific quotes.

Was raised Catholic (also Catholic schools, etc.).  My mom and some others on her side of the family are quite religious.

I've been a complete atheist since age 21 or so (I'm 26 now).  The last remnants of my belief in some sort of God (generalized higher power) was hard to let go of.  For years I found myself trying and trying to tie a higher power into science, but realized the futility in the end.

The final conflict was along the lines of "well, I'm not capable of understanding a higher power if it exists, so I'm agnostic".

Agnosticism is bullshit though.  All day everyday we function by holding ideas/concepts to be true.  Even if we don't have concrete proof of something, we can be as sure as we can be that it's true.  We tend to hold a certain view to be true if the evidence weighs in favor of that view.  Why should belief in a God be any different?  There's no evidence of the existence of a God, so it's dipshit to say "well, it can't be proven right or wrong, so I'll be agnostic".  By the standards of how my mind operates, it's wrong.  For all intents and purposes God doesn't exist, i.e. God doesn't exist.

Holding a view based purely on faith and then interpreting the events of your life within that view leaves you molding the truth to fit your belief system.  That's retarded, guys.

spirituality and religion wasnt a part of my life growing up. and then, i ate mushrooms when i was 16...

my parents dont buy into anything, so it wasnt ever really brought up when i was growing up. we would kind of just keep it real and talk about how ridiculous it all was. taking more of a scientific, logical approach versus blindly believing theres a sky wizard out there.

The Old Testament is actually about like four different Gods. There is El-Shaddai, the mountain god of healing; Yahweh, the war god; and then there's a bunch of Babylonian shit, just for the sake of syncretism.

Deuteronomy was written to consolidate the power of the King of Israel right before that country was sacked by Babylonians and a bunch of Israelis got kidnapped away to Babylon, and much of the rest of the bible was written by captured Jews to reconcile Babylonian religion with Deuteronomy.

The New Testament says that all these political events are no longer relevant and that you should do what you want.

Isn't it amazing that it took people so many thousands of pages to lay down such obvious facts?

my Mum is from Yemen she is a very devout ṣūfī-Muslīmiah i fall in and out of favor with how strict some things can be but i always have her to lean on and show me. i grew up with it, going to Mosque, salaat, dhkir, Muraqaba, fasting during the prescribed times, whirling & chanting. and there were times that i practiced it full on even wearing hijab, and i found great happiness and calming peace within it. but it is easy to get lazy and fall out of it and sometimes things happen and i cant help but to feel scorn towards Allāh, but Allāh knows that we are only human, and to be human we will err. i know one day i will find myself strong enough to pick myself back up again. i know that when i have a child, i will definitely share ṣūfīsm and its traditions with my very own family

Thank you for sharing that. I find it interesting as I have no personal knowledge or expereince with islam and especially sufi. I wonder if we have anyone raised or practicing Sikhism here..?

I like to mix my views on "god" with all of the rituals, teachings traditions of the major religions. Mostly I just insert "universal energy" in place of "god" and they all seem to make much more sense to me.

i was embarrassed to share that part of me here in the beginning but i have gotten over that. i was practically raised ṣūfī so if anyone has a question feel free to ask or :pm: . my Mum is Arab imigrant she is very religious. my father is white (french) born in the US he is not very religious at all. this caused a strange balance of religion in our family while i was growing up but he always supported my Mum 100% in all of her religious endevours so we pretty much did it her way

IMO the drive to separate the learnings of humanity into "religions" is a psychotic phenomenon. Why is it so hard for people to be so syncretistic?

I wouldnt call it a psychotic phenomenon. More so just a social phenomenon.  I see it on the level of educational kids shows.

People have just forgotten how to separate the teachings from the story. People take life too seriously.

i was adopted and raised in a mormon family... they stopped making me go to church at 17. what a life it's been, the extremes i've seen let me tell ya!

now my philosophy applies principles of zen buddhism, psychedelics (they are my religion. if you think this is stupid, idk, maybe you have issues?,) and all of nature, in general

not raised in any religion.  my parents saw church as something that interrupted an otherwise great sunday morning nap.  morals were taught, I suppose, from a humanist standpoint.

nowadays, I try to mix, mash, and make my own way.  I think I lean most towards buddhist, daoist, and certain types of shamanism as "interesting ideas".  I think the unfortunate part of my upbringing is that I'll never truly be able to accept any type of faith without ultimately finding it an interruption to my own nap schedule...

as Anhoktohen said, morals are taught, mostly from example but occassionally
from the bible but typically it's only when they mention it, one of the
things they recently heard from their mom was the story of solomon and the
baby, they had no idea what the moral of the story was because their mother
is clueless about morality, I had to finish giving them that part

You could say I was raised Episcopalian then later the folks converted to Catholicism which is where I formally left religion behind but never really felt attached to begin with. My grandparents lived in a more outlaying area so of course went to a United Methodist congregation  .  The ideological, better than thou bullshit that was spewed from that pulpit is second to none.  Digressing, I will say one of the Episcopal priests I had was cool as hell, cussed all the time- and had a deep connection with Islam, martial arts, and alternative medicine.  I need to go visit him as he is with hospice although doing remarkably well right now (has something similar to MS) and is the closest thing I've ever had to a mentor.

I would categorize myself as agnostic now,  mainly I just try to treat people well and keep a positive attitude about this whole mystical thing we're all in together.

I was raised in the Catholic church and went through 12 years of Catholic school. I regularly attended church for about the first 12 years of my life.

When I turned 12 I essentially became an atheist. I figured that God wasn't real, especially the way "he" was depicted in the bible and through church.

When I turned 15 I got into Wicca and Buddhism. I started my own solitary practice, experiencing things with others sporadically along the way.

I focused mostly on meditation and being aware of my desires through Buddhism. I would meditate often to enter different conscious states that surprisingly proved to be quite therapeutic at the time.

I did most of my spiritual work through Wicca, however. I practiced daily, working on such things as astral projection and spell casting.

I experienced a lot of strange stuff doing Wicca, lots of things I don't mention to most people. Throughout my practice I shared my findings mostly with hindus, as they would notice me reading various spiritual texts and showed great interest in what I was doing.

Today, I guess I'm agnostic, but I tell most people I'm an atheist if they ask. IMO atheism is one of the most logical and "correct" stances you can take on religion as a whole. If I were to say that I believe in anything, it would be that we live in a physical world that is parallel to a world of energy... our consciousness is our souls, and that energy is passed on to another body when we die. Or, we just die and our consciousness is merely a product of our brains. I only (almost) believe in this because of my work with astral projection...

I wouldnt call it a psychotic phenomenon. More so just a social phenomenon.  I see it on the level of educational kids shows.

People have just forgotten how to separate the teachings from the story. People take life too seriously.

Is true, but I think that when it gets to the point where doctrinal differences control your life more than the message from which those doctrines sprang, you have definitely achieved a psychotic condition.

I think it's just a human thing.

Do you honestly think we can reach the point where we solely focus on morality and ethics and not use or form religious doctrine? And not let it (religion, spirituality, whatever) rule some facets of society?

It would require a great evolution in thinking, and human genetic manipulation (LOL).

As long as there are people, the religious BS is going to spring up

I was raised with no particular religion really. My parents aren't religious but my Grandparents on one side are, so I was baptized and I went to church very rarely when I stayed the night at their house as a kid. I never believed any of what they said any I really didn't like going because it was a waste of a morning where I could be watching cartoons and stuff like that.

Now I am Agnostic who leans towards Atheism. I would also consider myself fairly spiritual as well though.

IMO spirituality will usually always lead to formation of religion, by at least some of the spiritual people.

Manipulation? By governments, maybe? Even if you outlawed organized religion, people would still gather to worship, etc. It happens in China

I guess I'm just a misanthrope, I don't think we can reach that state as we are now.

Manipulation by people who know what's up. They are not organized, they just know what's up.

So has it always been.

Yes I agree. Spirituality will always lead to religion. Religion is a tool of control and people searching for spirituality can tend to be influenced easily and this weakness plays right into the hands of people inclined to take advantage of it.

Creating laws to govern these morals and ethics will also create an easy way for people to exploit control and power. People use law just like they use religion. Just exploiting morality instead of spirituality.

I think a society solely focused on morality and ethics wouldnt work even if that point was achieved. A balance is necessary and this is the idea of a Matriarchal society.

None really. There are a lot of different religions within my family, but I wasn't brought up exclusively in any of them. I've been everywhere from pentecostal revivals, synagogues and black churches in the city, to a buddhist temple that was a few miles up the street from my house. My grandmother was a baptist, my grandfather a mason and a kabbalist, and my father saw himself as a deist. My mother, step father, and other siblings were Roman Catholic, and later became Greek Orthodox. I, couldn't care less about any of it.

I love the fish fry's that Masons and Catholics have, the Jewish parties, and pure ridiculousness of the Pentecostals. It's all a pretty good time as long as you don't start measuring their beliefs against your own.
