The Recent Hippy Trend.

God FUCKING damn. I don't know if older posters will be with me on this one, but I've noticed some things the past couple years, especially at school (middle school - college) that I think are kinda weird... but now that I'm not in school anymore I see these things go on and I think their fucking retarded. But it seems like the idea / act of being a "hippy" is like a popular trend now. Its a fad, a cool thing to do, a fashion statement of sorts (if you want to call it that).
I am out of school. Graduated high school, went to college for a bit, but dropped out due to things out of my control, but I'm liking life without school. It really has allowed me to mature in other ways from my peers and shit and things are going good.
In middle school and high school, people always looked at me and categorized me as a hippy. This was based on my attitude and outlook on life (i guess? never really understood why people made this stupid assumption), not the clothes I wore, the vocabulary that I used, the music I listened to, the drugs that I did, or what I looked like (despite long hair and a beard... I've had long hair since I was a small boy and a beard since I could grow one); just my outlook and attitude. I never identified my self as a hippy or felt like a hippy or anything but I didn't really care and I was like whatever. I never took pride in being called a hippy, I thought it was annoying but not annoying enough to do anything about it. I went through my days being myself, doing what I wanted and it was chill whatever.
But so, middle school. Everyone called me a hippy. High school, this continued. But high school is when you meet other kids and shit, so I would make some friends usually the other "hippy" kids would come up to me and shit...we'd talk... but ALWAYS about hippy type shit. It was like all these kids wanted to do. Talk about classic rock, or the grateful dead or some bullshit. Some stereotypical hippy ass mother fucking stupid hippy BULLshit.
Looking back on it now, it all seemed so fake, so staged, like such fucking BULLshit. These kids would come up and be like "Oh yeahhhh man. Grateful dead is like my liffffe (stupid fucking stoner / hippy bullshit drag)". Meanwhile these fucking kids are growing up in THIS day and age and probably have listened to a couple grateful dead songs they downloaded off limewire because its a "hippy" thing to do.
But yeah, so back to the point, it just seems like the hippy thing is a big stupid act. At least in the age group of 16-25. I've met a good three to four LEGIT people who this is who they are, but most of these kids it just seems so fucking stupid. One day they'll be like "yeah mannnn moneys not everything fuck materials man lets just live in the woooods." Than the next day, you'll see them pulling out of their huge house in their brand new BMW on the way to buy some overpriced factory made Tie-Die and dead stickets. Fucking bullshit it pisses me off that people can be so stupid. Anyone else notice this shit?
EDIT: I don't want this to come off as me saying I am a "true" hippy. Fuck hippys. I am not a hippy in any way. This is a thread about a normal kid complaining about fake hippys.

Long hair + beard = hippy or bum. I guess your friends figured you weren't a bum.
I think most people who act like hippies are in it for the drugs.

I dunno man, I think its weird. I could see that's why people would assume that with me, kinda obvious, but I would never identify with being a hippy. I'm mostly talking about how now, theres these people (high school kids) being all like "yeah dude I'm so glad were hippies its awesome." I don't know if you've had personal experience with these people but some of the kids I hang out with are like this (didn't notice it as much in high school thought it was them doin there thing) only to relise now its just all bullshit.
These kids who claim to be free spirits are just trying to work their hippy cred to be top hippy it seems. They aren't free spirits at all just as chained up as the other high school cliques they make fun of are. Which, is ofc annoying because these kids preach "be your self" but none of them are being themselves at all, just being hypocrites. I dunno.

Well... No, I don't have experience. Those guys sound like douche bags that I wouldn't want to hang out with.
And it's better than an emo/goth/vampire/cutter/etc trend.
I went through a little phase in college where I was a pseudo-hippie. No shaving, cutting hair. Went a week without shoes. I did shower every few days though. I came to realize that long hair is a pain in the ass to wash, and it's less hassle to just cut it. And aren't hippies all about "less hassle"?

yup. everyone loves wearing tie die and hemp and sporting their grateful dead t shirts
but theres no commitment to the ideals. its like people forget about the anarchistic and anti-consumerism ideals that are (were) at the center of the movement.

I think the real arguement is against people who put on a social stereotype, or just following what their crowd does. It isn't just hippies, I'd take a guess and say that everybody does this to some extent.
I have long hair, a beard and I listen to the Dead, but I wouldn't call myself a hippy. None of my close friends are like me in those respects though. I don't think the problems is that you know hippies and all hippies are douches, the problem is that you know hippies and those hippies are douches.

I haven't read much of this thread, but there's a "hippy friendly" town near me called yellowsprings. Everytime I go i feel like burning the place down. There's a few old hippies who sell shit like homemade jewelry on the street i'm fine with those people, I can respect that, but then there's the main strip filled with "hippy" stores. All the shits from china and crazy expensive. My girlfriend like dresses and we looked a few times fucking 60-90 dollar everything in these stores. The hypocrisy of the places drives me insane.

Getting all hung up and angry about something so petty is retarded. Angry enough to spend your time writing a huge post that says "FUCKIN" and "bullSHIT" every other word.
There's obviously much worse shit to be angry about, and even then it's a waste of time to let it make you angry.
