I will be getting started, ASAP. I have spores on order. I really only learn well by doing; not so well by reading. I'll be learning and building as I go. Will probably start with a "PF TEK" to SGFC until I have a "martha" made. At that point, ill probably nocc grain up and then txr to "bulk"; and reserve "cakes" for testing and what not.
Many species to learn. I'm especially interested in oysters, turkey tails, sponge, psilocybe and a few others too. Need to learn a lot about mycorrhizal types for the garden veggies and other crops.
I'm very excited. I've been reading quite a bit these last six or so weeks :-)

That's the one I've been reading, along with Shroomery and search engines, for the past several weeks... The others I just received :-)

I haven't read Mycelium Running but I watched Stamets' TED speech and that whole concept is really interesting....especially how the mycelium can attract insects that attract birds that drops seeds that grow into plants, etc.

FYI; to all other noobs!
I didn't have a forstner bit in half inch; so I used a brad-point vortex bit. Long story short; I drove into town and purchased a 1/2" forstner bit. Shortly upon my return, I was rewarded for doing so, with beautiful and clean holes.
Point of story: use a forstner bit; there is no substitute.

The only thing that gets me weary with a used one is needing someone with a masters in medical physics to calibrate it for us. Plus we will be really screwed if there are any parts missing, or broken. There aren't that many mass spec techs out there,.....
You can definitely score a used one for 20,000 but that could turn into 200,0000 real quick.
I'm pretty sure if we pool our resources we could pull it off though bro,
Then we could really get into "Independent Research" ...........

Q: better to plug the bottoms of the nooc portals with silicone now; or later, when they start losing their seal?

Not quite sure I understand the question, but- the lids are better to work with when new, so do any drilling, scuffing or siliconeing right when you get them out of the box, not months later.

I'll explain better (i hope): I used blue syringe injection/extraction plugs for my lids (as previously pictured). They are siliconed to the lid and just about fully cured (24hrs). Many will fill the void of the plug with silicone at time of construction. While some, will wait and fill the plug void later, when the plug starts to lose its elastic youth (to prolong its life/use).
Wanted informative opinions as to which might be better. Thank you for your input :-)

IMO, there's no need for separate ports if you have silicone. But it's cool either way.

I went ahead and filled the cavities. I'll be moving away from cakes and moving onto nocc'ing grain, once I'm successful with cakes. With the cavities filled, I won't have to worry about grain getting jammed into the plugs :-)
Had to reread some TEKs to remember ALL the "why for", LOLz

I'm really worried about contamination, where I live. I swear, even plastic will rot here, lol. As such, I am very concerned about my first, simple, cheap fruiting chamber... Does anyone have any suggestions? Note: it high humidity, almost year round here, so I'm not worried about drying out. Just FREAKED about contams ;-/

hmmmm,
Calm down, don't worry about contams. You are going to have to learn to deal with them one way or another. Usually we learn the hard way. We get through the teething period, and before you know it we are a brat that thinks they know everything,....... Fast forward a couple years and we realize that we don't know shit about fungi yet, we haven't even gotten off the base never mind being anywhere near the tip of the iceberg.
It is pretty cool actually.
You should enjoy it.

Seriously; I really should not expect most of you to understand, unless you have lived a few years on the PNW Coast or somewhere very tropical. Florida and southern Georgia come to mind. My First Grow Plan (as things stand): Using one syringe; I will nocc five fresh rye flour cakes and five floured 5-grain chicken scratch... I'll be using the "dunk 'n' roll" TEK... Trying to keep my first grow simple, while I gather supplies and build a "martha"....
Sooo... I'll probably only ever need a tub-type FC for a max of ten cakes.

NO, seriously. You didn't battle contams while growing shrooms on the PNW Coast??? Sweetness! Because I probably have enough spores in my lungs alone, to recolonize the Earth, lol.

It's a freaking' petri dish here, lol. Even with our hardwood off the ground, we still battle with fungi black rot :-( Fly agar, chantrelles, morels, etc; they all grow around here. Problem is, so do a zillion other fungi, molds, yeasts and bacterium :-(

Both done by me; thanks :-)
They are, in essence, vacutainer plugs; but there are nicer, more robust, ones than the ones I'm using. These are actually more like bottle tops that would have been banded to a glass bottle for drawing out solution via a syringe. It's nothing original, I must confess. There are some awesome TEKs in these here parts

But it will still be moist, lol... Chips, on the other hand, go stale in about two hours...
I lived in central Oregon for several months back a few years. Had the exact opposite problem: could leave a bowl of chips out all week... But you better eat your sandwich in five minutes or it'll be a cracker, lol.

Just north of Bend. Next town north, Redmond :-) its even drier in Redmond than Bend! Cool thing was chillin' outside in 10degF weather with just a tank top and sweat pants on (for ten minutes) and not being cold.

Now that I know what a PMP is (Perpetual Motion Physics), he he he.... I think a slightly modified Poor Man's Pod will be the cat's meow for me. I hope using perlite won't be of concern. I'll know soon enough, lol.
Any comments on using a FLEXIBLE BUBBLE WAND 48"?

Don't use a PMP. And if you do, use geolite and not perlite.
And just follow a tek, willya?

Why not a PMP??? ...and I already purchased a big add bag of perlite. Really not looking to buy more inert layering for awhile... so; what's not ideal about the PMP? It seems to be the closest to ideal option I have read up on thus far.

Poor FAE. An airpump really doesn't move that much air. And perlite will clog the bubbler, you want geolite.
But if you have perlite, you can make a shotgun FC. Which is what you actually want in the first place, so win/win.

Well noted... It's just that my job finds me away from home for 36~48hrs, a couple times a week. The PMP (modified), seemed to facilitate this better. I'll reread several of the SGFC TEKs once more.
One again, thanks for the input :-)

I agree with Doc. The Universe didn't have plastic when it started making the things 100,000,000 million years ago. K.I.S.S...(no offense) keep it simple, stupid- is and should be rule of thumb. I get excited because you're getting excited. THAT'S AWESOME. BRF, shotgun FC and glass. Cheap, non-digital humidity dial works great. I have the tendency to "over-analyze" things sometime...and that's a problem for me. My EGO thinks my ass oughta do 500 miles an hour, when my ass just wants to go 5. What happens is you get a speeding ticket from the universe and then it's downhill from there... KEEP UP THE KNOWLEDGE. "GET yo' learn on, my brother", that's what I say...but really- it's mother nature's call anyway. Peace out on that one.!

Don't get me wrong; I strive for simple :-) My ultimate wet dream would be a high-producing mushroom farm totally void of electrical necessity. Or, at the very least, from renewable resources of energy (preferably hydro) :-)
As we all know; each individuals surrounding and home-specific environments are "unique". My "unique environment" puts me ultra-high on the "contaminate prone" list, lol. Keep thinking; "...danger! Danger, Will Robinson, danger!" LOLz
Thank you all for the advice and encouragement... BTW; I've had several pages of RR's website saved for a couple weeks now. His videos are fun to watch and the writs done quite well :-)

I will eventually, if all goes well, be doing outdoor crops. We've got lots of Alder and Madrone here for feeding mushrooms :-) Myrtlewood seems to be on their menu as well (by observation). Grain-to-bulk is on my hopefully near horizon :-) It'll be a slow and ever evolving sort of thing. My budget is pennies, so its build-your-own cheap but highly functional... Fortunately; there are many I have the opportunity to gleam from, woot!

I'm kinda new at this too, and you've mentioned contamination issues several times. If you're cakes are sterilzed properly and practice the "still air" method with you're IC then there are no worries. (Unless the syringe is contaminated). Make sure your cakes are 100% colonized before fruiting. The DNA has securely finished it's mitosis by then. Too much humidity? then fan more. That's about all I've got, bro. Good luck, Horizon! Take some pic's when the lil' pinheads are done...would love to see them.

Making a SAB should be pretty easy to do. Then you can stretch your mycelium a 100 fold.

Working with agar is way down the line, in my new Mycology adventure. Probably not until after I've built a clean-room with a flowhood... However; I definitely will need to make spore prints and then make up some spore syringes, long before that point. If I can do both in a cheap-ass, tossed together, still air box... Then I'm definitely going to reread those TEKs Eh, I'll reread them, regardless!

yup.
you can pour agar and take prints in a glovebox as long as you follow a sterile and quick procedure. it also helps to go through the motions a few times to get the hang of it so that when it comes time to pour agar, it will be much easier.
as long as no air can get into the box, and you have sterilized the inside with rubbing alcohol and some spray disinfectant (and given time for the spray to settle, about 15-20 minutes), you will be good.
get the hang of a glovebox down before thinking about a flowhood. they cost all of $10 to build and will allow you to perfect a sterile procedure that a flowhood is a useless without.

One of my 5-grain cakes/jars is about 90% colonized!... with cobweb
One of my best colonizing rye cakes/jars is also growing teal colored crap, up near the surface
Still have four of each, though. So here's to hoping for some future success

My first 1/2 pint cakes are doing well Of the remaining 8 of 10; seven are 90~100%. Not sure what is up with the eighth one; it looks healthy, but there is a section void of growth. I assume there may be some contamination I can not recognize going on in there... I'll probably let them ALL sit for another two weeks, to fully consolidate; yes? . . . . .

Same order, just rotated 180deg:
. . . . . I'll be keeping a close eye on those two "slower" jars... I'll assume they are tainted if I don't see any growth in those areas soon.

Anyone else have an educated observation to share?
Will the near fully colonized jars be okay for another two weeks? Or do you think I'll have to birth them sooner?

I do see what appears to be a few micro-pins in two jars. Furthermore; seems the substrate has shrunk quite a bit... Think I should birth and soak?... Or wait until Monday?... I'll be gone from Friday afternoon til Sunday Evening... Hmmmmmmmmm...

I came to realize my dilemma... They will just have to wait until Sunday night:
1. I leave town in approx 19 hours from now
2. I'm going to sleep, after a nightcap <bubble, bubble>
3. I won't be around to pamper them this weekend
I figure; worst case scenario, I lose a few early pins... Maybe that will assist in a more even flush? Does anyone ever really get an even flush from "brf" cakes?

About to leave home for the weekend... Upon my return; my plans are to:
-PC four pint jars, with approx 300ml distilled H2O, for 30 minutes. Lids have syringe filter disk and vacutainer port.
-Mark pint and 1/2 pint jars to associate one to one, with eachother
-Using a 60cc syringe and 16ga needle; will extract sterile water to 1/2 pint cake for 24hr soak
-Remove soak water and place back into properly marked pint jar of H2O
-Test myc-water with my stupid BRF/H2O petri thingies
-Use good myc-water to noc up some grain jars
So am I nucking futs?

Thanks for the reply, Doc...
I though I could do a "sterile soak" for my cakes... to make some myc-water to noc up some grain jars...
Think it'll work?

I think it should work ok. I think you could also just stab a syringe needle into the cake and aspirate a bit of juice then just inject into LC broth. I did this with a fresh shroom. I tried to get a tissue sample from a mushroom only to squirt in some mushroom juice, no noticeable tissue entered the jar. I only saw a slight mist leave the syringe (mushroom juice). A few days latter I had a beautiful culture going that worked flawlessly.

My cakes are now dunked... Had some of the cutest lil pins... Boy, they blued fast! Wow? Three are soaking with sterile water inside their own original jars. Three are dunked in a pot of water with a weight holding them submerged.

HorizonSpawn, congrats on a fine first grow. It's nice to see someone willing to do it right the first time. I'd give ya +5 shrooms if I was allowed....not at 50 posts yet.
I guess it helps not to be a teeny-bopper with no source of income other than your weekly $5 allowance...this appears to be about half of the noobs on here...although I admit to being one of them once upon a time...I just didn't know about the shroomery back then...don't think it existed.
anyways.... can't wait to see pics of those first few beauties.

Some pin porn pics I snapped this morning

One is just starting to pin. The sixth is about to start pinning (i think)... Definitely can tell which four had started pinning in the jar... and to think, I rubbed all the pins off before putting in FC
