Hey guys, sorry if this has been asked before, I looked through the archives and couldn't find anything. I'm about to start a PF Tek BRF/VERM cake grow. I had an awful time finding Mason Jars, I went to Walmart, Kmart, Michael's, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowes, and Home Depot (when I was buying VERM). I finally went to ACE Hardware and found some. I wanted the Kerr 1/2 pint jars, but they didn't have any - so I had to go with Ball. The jars I got are 8oz Quilted Regular Mouth Ball Jelly Jars. Are these OK to use? They say regular mouth, but they go straight up just like the wide-mouth jars - they don't indent. I don't know what makes these regular mouth. They also seem a little taller and thinner than the Kerr, I may be wrong I've only seen the Kerr's in photos. Thanks in advance guys.

I think as long as you can slide your cake right out you will be fine.. Check your local area for canning supplies or vegetarian/vegan food prep stores. they will carry everything from PC's, to dehydrators, to jars. Good luck.

Those will work, but possibly not as well as the normally used half-pints. They are taller & skinnier than normal half-pint jars, and for BRF, you optimally want wider than tall. I really don't think you'll have any problems though, honestly - people use widemouth pint jars all the time, which are almost twice as tall as wide.

I think the widemouths work better. Ace will order them in if you ask. Tall half pints can work, and they are good for other things, so it's not a waste. But get the widemouths too.

Most of those place you mention are going to have Mason jars but many times its considered a seasonal item and not stocked the rest of the year. Late summer and fall they are easy to find. This time of year I have to visit multiple stores to locate a case or two here and there. Grocery stores in nonaffluent areas have been the best sources for me. The suggestion for asking Ace to order whatever you need is likely your easiest solution?

Widemouths work better for sure. If the cake slides out you can still use them but they will never be quite as good as widemouth half pints...I have the same problem finding them at any local stores..I've checked every place that sells mason jars and noone sells them so I just order them online.

Just make sure you do not pack the substrate at all. Lighter and fluffier the better. They seem to take an extra day or two to colonize.
My Texas seem to like the regular mouth jars better than the wide mouths.
Also when you get large fruits on top the regular mouth cakes will sometimes fall over due to the narrower base.

Another option is PP5 plastic- rubbermaid makes some nice 1-cup containers with screwon lids.

This is exactly how I get my 8oz. wide-mouthed jars. Sets me back $9.99 and takes 3-5 days for them to be delivered to the ACE they were ordered from.
Wide mouths are said to work better then regular mouths because you increase the possibility of stalling cakes due to several factors when you use regular mouthed jars over wide-mouthed. Regular-mouthed jars will work, (I'v seen successful grows using regular-mouthed jars) it's just that with using wide-mouthed jars for BRF cakes, all factors aside, chances of success are better due to one simple reason, their shape.

For anyone in the Washington/Oregon area Fred Meyers currently has Kerr 1/2 pint wide mouth jars on sale for 5.99 for 12 jars. I actually got a canner pot w/ lid and rack for 12.99 and vermiculite, brown rice flour, lysol, golves and a few clear tubs for about 50 dollars total. Nice to find everything in one spot for a decent price. My spores should be delivered today so I am all set to go. Wish me luck!
