i calibrated it with the salt in a sealed container to 75% rh ( it was spot on ) but in the chamber its reading 130 to 140 ish
the walls are damp but no droplets!
can any one shed any light on this?

no, it's not possible. Wrap it in a wet rag and calibrate it to 100%

First off, it does NOT "read" 130~140 RH. A hygrometer only "reads" to 100%. There is no such thing as 100%+ humidity; only conditions that allow more or less moisture to be suspended in the air.

The salt test is invalid for humidity above 75% or so. Use the damp towel method.
I've never seen an analog hygrometer that had a scale above 100%. Doing so would make about as much sense as putting steel-toed boots on a frog. RR
