Germinating Mammillaria spp
    #14483109 - 05/20/11 07:19 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

So I put some fresh from the pod seeds in the germinator, under the same parameters that I planted some lophs.... its been 4 days and no signs of life...
the containter is super moist, I used only coarse river sand

any ideas?? I read somewhere that i have to let it dry, then remoist... is this true???

i think the seed coatings are very hard. they are designed to be broken down by stomach acid, pooed out and then they will germinate. we use sulphuric acid H2SO4 for the job of removing the outer skin and activating the seed. do be careful with H2SO4 tho. if you touch it it will burn you so bad!!! itll eat thru gloves too. and clothes. i find about a 96-98% solution sufficient. gotta be fuming. as for immersion times you really are gonna have to experiment. different seeds have different times. little ones like mamms only take a couple of seconds, then need immedieate rinsing and a substrate soaked in a fungus suppressor like chinsol.

i found this pdf that details this and other processes with other seeds. see what happens.:goodluck:

Lophs are often quite fast to germinate and we can't judge other genus based on this. Lots of variation within a genus too.

Of the 4 types of mammillaria I sowed this year, 2 were germinating after about a week, 1 took 2 weeks, and the last took 3 weeks, in pots sealed in bags.

Early days yet!

Give them a few weeks, then perhaps let them dry out and remoist.

Depends what kind of Mamms you're talking about.  Some Mammillaria seeds actually germinate faster with age.  There's also several species that have cryptocarpic fruits that withdraw into the stem of the plant, only to emerge years later or when the plant dies in a natural setting.  Many Mammillarias have germination inhibitor chemicals within the seed and especially if you consider cryptocarpic fruits it makes good sense why they'd do that.

Don't give up on them though.  I sowed 5-10 M. luethyi seeds a year or two ago and thought they might be bunk after 4-5 months of no germination.  One day 5+ months in I got one to sprout.  An acquaintance had ordered from the same source and had no germination at all, but perhaps they didn't wait long enough or let enough germination inhibitors run off from watering/etc.  I took a chance and grafted that one seedling and it's now growing happily
