    #14482975 - 05/20/11 06:26 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hi my £20 dial hygrometer  is reading 140% rh is this possible?

i calibrated it with the salt in a sealed container to 75% rh ( it was spot on ) but in the chamber its reading 130 to 140 ish

the walls are damp but no droplets!

no, it's not possible. Wrap it in a wet rag and calibrate it to 100%

First off, it does NOT "read" 130~140 RH. A hygrometer only "reads" to 100%. There is no such thing as 100%+ humidity; only conditions that allow more or less moisture to be suspended in the air.

The salt test is invalid for humidity above 75% or so.  Use the damp towel method.

I've never seen an analog hygrometer that had a scale above 100%.  Doing so would make about as much sense as putting steel-toed boots on a frog. :feelsgoodman:
