The Search for Ovoids: Part -4
    #14479856 - 05/19/11 05:25 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

6:00 am - time for mushroom hunting. The weather.com talks of thunderstorms, but I should be able to get a few hours in.

Habitat: Oatka Creek County Park - upstate NY.

Alright - so about 1 minute into the hike while I was walking down to the rather over-sized creek, I found these.

My first morel! A very unexpected surprise.

Heartened, I continued down to the waterline and began my search, poking through the weeds with my walking stick like a blind man making his way down a congested hallway. Although there were no ovoids in sight, i did find these:

Coprinus micaceus?

?

Polyporus squamosa was everywhere! This was an especially nice plumage.

So the next hour and a half was quite mushroomless, as the ground became more swamp-like.

Oatka Creek - It seemed like a perfect place for ovoids based on what I saw of other people's pictures, but the ovoids apparently disagreed.

And with the threat of thunderstorms (that never actually came), I decided it was time to call it quits and head back. Tomorrow I will be back home in New Jersey, where I plan on avidly continuing my hunt for ovoids.

Not C. micaceus, a Coprinus species. Not sure which.

The one below could be Inonotus dryadeus.

I've never found ovoids growing in swampy ground or around skunk cabbage (the big leafed plants in your 3rd to last photo.) Maybe others have.

Wondering if the Coprinus is Coprinopsis variegata.

Coprinus domesticus I think.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.
