Fighting Brain Cancer
    #14480045 - 05/19/11 06:04 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So, a bit of background. My brother had had tumors in his brain before... his head is about to be opened for the third time in five years. He's had a quarter of his brain removed and this next one... well, we're talking about if he makes it. Assuming he does, is there any kind of medicinal mushrooms that have been known to help fight brain cancer? I know several have been known to fight "cancer", but I do not know much more than this.  I want this to go away... or for him to live just a couple more years. Its a crap shot, but what other options are there? At least its trying something...

But yeah, any kind of advice on growable medicinal mushrooms for this situation would be very much appreciated...  thanks.

PS: I usually do about a weeks worth of research before eve thinking about asking questions, but I'm just frantic now..

I know shiitake will reduce many tumors, as well as increase overall health, which allows our immune systems to fight the cancer better.  It will take a few months to get started growing them, so you'll need to purchase shiitake for him to eat in the meantime.  My wife has been through two bouts of cancer, which is actually what led me to start growing shiitake in the first place, and now it's a business.  She's been cancer free for 7 years now.

I have no specific information regarding brain cancer.  I hope and wish the best for your brother's recovery.

I dunno if this helps, but you can also try with cannabis essential oil.
Sorry to hear about your brother :frown:

My personal belief is that anyone, healthy or ill, is going to benefit from ingesting shiitakes or reishi. I don't know anything about them and brain cancers but they are demonstrated to be quite helpful for at least a number of assorted cancers.
On a parallel path, it is also worth looking into what has been done in terms of published research concerning the use of cannabis for treating cancers (mostly in Spain post-1999 but there is an interesting paper from A.E. Muson et al. 1975 J Natl. Cancer Inst. 55 (3): 597-602 that was almost disregarded at the time) and also into the accounts of what is being done in terms of human clinical trials in Spain and Europe and human self care in Canada and the US. Its a high dose approach that's been giving the reports that are noteworthy but its remarkable stuff that was and is being reported. Including a rodent study with complete recovery of several rodents given experimental gliomas. Maybe 3 out of 20 subjects? My memory is glitchy anymore but I think that is right. The primary references should be easily located with google using keywords like Spain THC cannabinol glioma Molecular Biotherapy (the journal this report appeared in) or just cannabis and cancer. More recent work exists as well. The crazy part is how this gets relatively little notice in the US by either academia or the press.
I also know someone here in California who recovered fully from a brain tumor (diagnosed and documented for both the disease and recovery) using peyote in ceremonial context with the NAC. Again high dose, in his case repeated and focused in intention not light dose or casual consumption.
I'm not a doctor and can't offer medical advice but can offer those observations, blessings and the wishes for the best of success.

I second Shiitake and Reishi in terms of musrooms. I also have read very good things regarding hemp oil. See Phoenix Tears for more info on hemp oil including how to make it. And also see the documentary - Run from the Cure.

Finally, I remember an interview with a university researcher who was looking at the effect of fasting on brain cancer specifically. You can look into the hows and why's for yourself but the short of it was 7-10 days of nothing but water can potentially kill brain cancer by starving it to death. From what I understand the brain transports glucose across the blood-brain which the cancer also uses to sustain itself. However, with a prolonged fast the brain switches from glucose to ketones as fuel. Ketones are produced from fat and fuel the heart and brain during times of fasting. Cancer cannot use ketones as fuel to sustain itself. Thus is starves and dies. They were getting good results. If you want more info I'll see if I can dig up the audio interview.

Certainly I'm not a doctor and nothing I've said should be taken as professional medical advice. I just want to help by contributing info I've come across.

google ABM (agaricus blazei murill), its supposed to be the strongest anti tumor/anti cancer mushroom, more so than reishi and shiitake, but i recommend all 3 (in consultation with his doc of course).  You can probably find all of them in capsule form but in the mid term i recommend growing and consuming fresh.  My fresh reishi was 20x stronger than the store bought ganocoffee that i tried for comparison.

These mushrooms also alleviate side effects of chemotherapy (especially the reishi, i think).  Though im not a doc, since these mushrooms boost the immune system they should not be taken if your on immune suppressing medicine (i.e. like after some surgery eg. transplants).

sorry about your brother. good luck.

Oh, also check out Turkey Tail Mushroom (Coriolus versicolor), they make an anti-cancer drug from this in japan (the japanese swear by it). or Trametes versicolor also turkey tail, not sure if it works for brain cancer but you could do more research.

Lastly Maitake mushroom from the species Grifola frondosa.

I think if you made a top 10 list of medicinals, these would all make it.  If you dig a bit deeper you should be able to cut down the list.

Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi and Phellinus linteus.
Reishi and Phellinus linteus are the two best for tumors IMO but please research and grow all,  they will all help.

I feel your pain I recently lost my grand father to brain cancer.  Start growing mushrooms now or buy some chances are good that he will make it through surgery if it is his third time.

If you need cultures pm me and I will get you set up.

Good luck and best wishes.

Lion's mane has a lot of neurogenic benefits which can help with the surgeries.  Aloha medicinals sells lots of products til you can get the growing down right. Best of luck with the surgery.

I would advise you to be careful and use a google scholar search to confirm any claims or thoughts raised here or elsewhere.  Unfortunaately, cancer is a tricky thing and not well undertood, and people have a great tendency towards confirmation bias (i.e. if cancer is later undetectable they claim success but if they died they wouldn't be claiming anything).

Additionaly, its pretty much impossible to say someone's free of cancer in the first place, only that you don't know of any, so this leads to people with remissions describing their situation as a cure, only to later die or suffer greatly.

Due to the nature of cancer and the long time spans which can be involved, its difficult to get reliable antecdotal evidence, and I'd make sure to check out the state of the evidence.  This isn't because I think there's any particular ill effects that should be watched for, but rather to protect against the heartbreak and pain that can come along with mistaken beliefs.  (due to the nature of the shroomery's demographic, there's plenty of hippy/conspiracy folks you can find to tell you anything you want to hear as well, so I'd be careful to confirm things you're interested in)

There is a lot of information on tumours and the effect of mushrooms on them, use Google scholar and you will find studies, mostly done on animal and cellular trials, but they all point in the same direction.  Mushrooms have anti-cancer/anti-tumour properties.

Your brother will need a strong dose, I would use about 20g if using a tea, or 2g if using an extract per day.

I trust your brother is able to survive surgery and live a good life!

Hi. You want to get in a consistent amount of medicinal mushroom extracts. You need the extract form and I'd recommend taking them throughout the day. In addition to medicinal mushroom extracts also good quality cannabis oil. Bulk mushroom extracts are provided here http://www.invincibleherbs.com
